1997 Matanzas Creek Sonoma Valley Merlot
Back In Stock!
92 points Wine Spectator: "Delicious California Merlot, ripe and juicy, with pretty, rich, elegant black cherry, currant, cassis and wild berry flavors that hold their focus on a long, lively finish. *Highly Recommended* (JL)" (09/2000) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A classy Merlot, sleek and well structured, with hints of blackberry, chocolate, anise, herb and toast that are securely nestled inside. Firm, ripe tannins frame the ensemble, which should really blossom in two to five years." (12/2001) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "No notes given." (06/2001) ...

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby with a garnet core. Opens with appealing smells of sottobosco, tobacco, wet soil and spicy cedar. Redolent of overripe fruit, primarily plum jam, and a heady mix of earthy flavors and fresh road tar. In spite of a pronounced acid bite the abundant tannins are suave, and there is an impression of density and weight. The long finish carries an aftertaste of roasted chestnuts. The acids seem slightly intrusive but the wine intensity and zest are nonetheless quite attractive. (EB)" (07/2002) ...

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It doesn't get any better than 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, a perfect wine. Representing the essence of cassis liqueur intermixed with blackberries, minerals, licorice, and toast, this full-bodied, multi-dimensional classic is fabulous, with extraordinary purity, symmetry, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. It has the overall equilibrium to evolve for nearly two decades, but it will be hard to resist upon release. (RP)" (01/2000) 95 points Wine Spectator: "A potent wine of finesse and grace, this weaves...

90-91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Exotic, enticing aromas of black fruits, cherry cough syrup, roast coffee and caramel, along with pungent oakiness. Sweet, fat and thick in the mouth, but with adequate framing acidity. Quite ripe on the back end, with much finer tannins than the foregoing '97s. (ST)" (06/1999) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Only 55% of the harvest was utilized for the 1997 Mouton-Rothschild. One of the most forward and developed Moutons over recent years, it possesses all the charm and fle...

91 points Robert Parker: "A concentrated, seductive, and age-worthy offering, this dark ruby/purple-colored 1997 possesses gorgeous symmetry, abundant quantities of seductive black raspberry and cherry fruit, full body, a fat, chewy mid-palate, and roasted blackberries, coffee, and toasty oak in the finish. A superb effort for the vintage, it can be drunk now (because of its low acidity and sweet tannin), or cellared for 15+ years. Bravo!" (04/2000)
Price: $109.99

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine, produced by winemaking consultant Heidi Barrett, is impressive. There are 600 cases of the 1997, all from a 3.5-acre Cabernet Sauvignon parcel planted with the Grace clone. Sweet, rich, full, and concentrated is the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by pure black currant fruit intertwined with tobacco, vanillin, and spice. This lush, full-bodied effort displays sweet tannin, and cuts a powerful swath across the palate. The finish reveals high extraction and harmony. (RP)" (...

89-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The ruby-colored 1997 Grands-Echezeaux reveals black fruit aromas intermingled with notes of tobacco and cedar. This is a powerful, full-bodied, supple wine with flavors reminiscent of stones, earth, minerals, cigar smoke, and mixed berries. Well-structured and extremely flavorful, it should be at its best if drunk over the next 6 years. Vincent Mongeard, who now runs this famous estate, is extremely happy with his 1997s. 'When I compare my wines to those of my colleagues, I am comforted in what I was able to ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of pure cassis and blackberries with flinty notions in the background. Full-bodied, powerful, tannic, pure, and backward, it needs another 8-10 years of cellaring. (RP)" (12/2000) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Sharply focused, with a pretty beam of plum, currant and black cherry flavors, framed by spicy, cedary oak and finishing with dry tannins. (JL)" (10/2000) Vinous: "Saturated ruby. Brooding aromas of blueberry, blac...

95 points Wine Spectator: "Dark ruby-garnet. Aromas of blackberry, fresh porcini and licorice. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long caressing finish. Very youthful and powerful. Give it a couple of years. (JS, Web-2007)" 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Fontalloro may be the finest made from this single vineyard (and I have tasted them back through the early eighties). Aged two years in French oak, there are 3,000 cases of this spectacular wine. Dense ruby/purple-colored, with a chocolate espresso-scented nose infused with cher...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (almost totally from the Nun's Canyon Vineyard) is reasonably priced for a wine of such high quality. An opaque purple color is accompanied by a big, bold, spicy, oaky nose infused with licorice, coffee, and abundant quantities of blackberry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, rich, and impressive, with sweet tannin as well as abundant wood, it will drink well for the next 15 years. 92 points Wine & Spirits: "No tasting note given." (12/2000) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Here’s a rich, solid Cab from a good winery with a proven track record. Made in the Bordeaux style, with 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it’s got ripe black-currant and plum aromas and flavors and a solid dose of toasty new French oak. Very balanced and complex. The tannins are soft enough to drink it tonight, but it can also age, if you want. " (12/2000) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Oaky aromas of ...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 1997 La Romanée Grand Cru, a Bouchard Père et Fils bottling that came from Louis-Michel's own cellar, was picked on September 22. It has one of the more attractive noses from this era, not dissimilar to the 1995, whereby the fruit seems less worked. There are lively red berry fruit, blood orange and Clementine, fine delineation and lift. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, ripe and slightly savory red fruit with a touch of gaminess ...

90 Points Robert Parker 2 Red Glasses Gambero Rosso One of Amarone's most difficult to get wines. Lush on the palate, full of spicy, flavors reminiscent of wild cherries rolled in cocoa powder, anise, mineral and tobacco, all couched together in a richly textured, many layered, fleshy finish. Perfect with Parmigiano or even Gorgonzola, on a cold night in front of the fire!

93 points Wine Spectator: "Packed with ripe, chalky flavors of blackberry, earth, black licorice and mocha. The firm tannins harmonize nicely with espresso notes on the finish." (10/2000) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An impressive wine that would have gotten an even higher rating if it had not shown so much toasty new oak, this tannic 1997 reveals a fine texture as well as a wealth of sweet, jammy black currant fruit infused with smoke, mineral, and leather." (12/2000)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One of the most beautiful wines in the Stature series is the impressive 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Stature. Sourced from vineyards such as Veeder Peak and Andy Beckstoffer's To-Kalon Vineyard, it offers up creme de cassis aromas intermixed with new saddle leather, vanillin, spice box, and minerals. Full-bodied, rich, and seamless, this voluptuously-textured, thick, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon can be drunk now or cellared for up to two decades. (RP)" (12/2000) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Remarkably elegant and polis...

Lush, fat and stuffed with spicy cassis fruit, nicely framed by lively acids and sexy oak. This has a terrific core of fruit and impressive verve. Finishes firm, ripe and young." (12/2000) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "he dark plum-colored 1997 Isosceles, an unfiltered blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc, exhibits a sweet nose of damp earth, blackberry and cherry fru...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Merlot might be called liquified Viagra. An incredibly sexy nose of smoke, black fruits, cappuccino, and toasty wood is followed by an expansive, terrifically concentrated wine with a sumptuous texture, no hard edges, beautifully integrated acidity and tannin, and a long, 35 second finish. According to the back label, about 5% Cabernet Sauvignon was added in the blend of this stunningly aromatic, multi-dimensional wine. It should drink well for 12-15 years. This is a spectacular wine that must be tasted ...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Cassis, violet and lightly tarry, spicy oak. Ripe, dense and very concentrated; thick and deep. Not at all overly sweet or dominated by the wood. Has superb material and verve. Finishes very long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. The finest vintage for this wine in a long time, and one that avoids the excesses of (American) oak that have plagued so many recent vintages." (12/2000)

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98RP, 94WS, 93CG, 91VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 1997 is just short of perfection from this great vintage in Napa Valley. A spectacular wine, it was the first made by Rosemary Cakebread. Production was quite high, as the new plantings started to fully produce, with 4,800+ cases declared. This is wine that fills the olfactory senses with gorgeous ripeness, blueberries, black raspberries, blackberries and cassis, while spring flowers and a touch of oak still lingers in the aromatics. When the wine hits the palate, the extraordinary intensity, purity and multi-dimensional complexity all seem to converge with a cascade of fruit, glycerin and richness. Like most Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignons, it is only 13.8% alcohol. This is a magnificent wine, a young adolescent in the scheme of its potentially fascinating evolution and should have a good 25-30+ yea

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of pure cassis and blackberries with flinty notions in the background. Full-bodied, powerful, tannic, pure, and backward, it needs another 8-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035+. (RP)" (12/2000)

Bid on this magnum of 1997 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (97DC, 95RP, 93VN, 90ST). Decanter: "At the peak of its powers, the 1997 Howell Mountain is bursting with black fruit, graphite, wood smoke and hints of tar and truffle. On the palate the wine is rich, plush and generous but well balanced, with great length and depth. A certain suppleness nods to the vintage's warmth, but that's by no means unwelcome in this typically firm-framed cuvée. (WK)"

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Antinori "Tignanello" Toscana (94RP, 94WS, 93DC, 93VN, 93WE). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "During the recorking ceremony for the 1971 Tignanello, I had the opportunity to taste four editions of the wine spanning the four decades of its production. The 1997 Tignanello was by far the most enjoyable of these wines. It is experiencing a perfect moment in its drinking window. Looking through The Wine Advocate archive, I see the suggestion of brett in a past review. I found absolutely no imperfections in this wine. Instead, the bouquet is generous and opulent with dark berry, spice, licorice and leather. Much of the Tignanello vineyards were replanted in the 1990s so I expect that the fruit came from younger vines. The finish is silky and long in persistency. (ML)" (10/2015)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1997 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98RP, 95WS, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 10,200 cases of the remarkable 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. Opaque purple-colored with a dense, chewy, full-bodied personality, it displays abundant cassis, mineral, and earth notes. This brilliantly made, super-concentrated, pure, blockbuster possesses sweet tannin as well as a terrific finish. Having added additional weight since last year, this sumptuous, multilayered, profoundly concentrated Cabernet contains 14% alcohol. It is a candidate for 25-30 years of longevity. (RP)" (12/2000)
Starting Bid: $405.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1997 Robert Mondavi "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (94WS, 92RP, 92VN, 91WE). Wine Spectator: "Superb, showing a wonderful sense of harmony. Complex and creamy, with telltale currant, anise and mocha scents. Excellent length. (JL, Web-2016)"
Starting Bid: $240.00

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1997 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is a dense purple color with boisterous, sweet, spicy, new oak, licorice, and olive notes. This flamboyant wine tastes lighter than I would have expected for a 1997. In the mouth, it reveals medium body, sweet jammy cherry fruit, and a soft finish. (RP)" (12/2000)
