Wine Enthusiast: "Robust in flavor and structure, this full-bodied wine offers ample ripe black-cherry and black-plum notes, moderate to full tannins and a healthy dose of oak that shows up as cedar, wood smoke and tobacco." (12/2019)
Price: $19.99

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a beautifully balanced, medium-bodied wine that goes beyond the basic black-fruit flavors and adds hints of dried earth and bay leaf on the nose and light wood smoke and black pepper flavors. Moderate tannins and persistent acidity complete the picture. *Editor's Choice*(JG)" (09/2018)

Robert Parker writes: "The black rocks of Obsidian Ridge in Lake County, at an elevation of 2,600 feet, make it one of the more distinctive terroirs in Northern California. Geologists have said that the soils have to be a minimum of 10,000 years old, which perhaps explains the high quality of these wines, which are selling at modest prices."
Price: $26.99

Owned by local residents the Jackson family, the Jax wines are made by Kirk Venge, whose work with B Cellars and Bacio Divino has made him a star in the region. Because of the location of the vineyard, the Jax vines only see afternoon sun on most days, which allows for a slow-ripening process and fruit of supreme concentration. These wines have been undiscovered gems for insiders and those in-the-know, but with the impact of the past Parker scores, the cat is definitely out of the bag.

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark red. Intensely floral aromas of spicy strawberry and raspberry underpinned by zesty minerality. Cinnamon-accented red berry flavors show excellent precision and thrust, with no excess fat. Finishes on a sexy note of Asian spices, with wonderful length. (ST)" (05/2007)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Syrah Madder Lake is co-fermented with 5% Viognier, and that gives the wine an exotic, heady feel to the exuberant aromatics. It is a wine to drink in the next 4-5 years and is a wonderful bistro-styled Rhone Valley red with loads of spicy, peppery, peach and blackberry fruit notes in a stunningly proportioned style. It’s seamless and velvety-textured." (12/2007)

Winemaker's notes: "Grown at 1450’ elevation on red, obsidian-strewn soil resulting from Mt. Konocti’s volcanic upheaval, the Arcanum red blend is all estate fruit made for every night drinking with dinner. Tasting notes: Based on Dolcetto, it is red-fruit focused with vivid cherry, damp earth, plum, and a touch of roasted herbs are part of an almost Spanish flavor profile. Low acidity and robust tannins are present. No new oak. Did someone say pizza? Vineyard: Located outside of Kelseyville, in Lake County, CA., our vineyard is planted to 13 different...
