93 points Vinous: "Good deep ruby. Deep, sappy aromas of cassis and bitter chocolate. Thick, round and rich, with almost port-like flavors of cassis, violet and licorice pastille. A bit fiery on the end but there's enough (natural) acidity to give shape to this extremely rich cabernet, which is from old clone 4 vines. (ST)" (05/2012) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Grand Daddy is quite a bit richer and deeper, with more tannins than the regular To Kalon bottling, most of which can ...

Eighty Four wines is a collaborative project between Doug Shafer of Shafer winery and his long time winemaker Elias Fernandez. The name comes from 1984 which was the inaugural vintage the two men worked on at Shafer winery together. This is an extremely small project with just 300 cases of Petite Sirah produced and 600 cases of Malbec. It's a very exciting project if you're a fan of Shafer Relentless or other Shafer wines, in which case you owe it to yourself to check out these limited-release offerings.

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, spices and lively orange zest. Broad but with a firm edge of acidity accentuated by the wine's tart orange fruit note. Like the B. Thieriot Chardonnay, this also expanded nicely in the glass. Plenty in reserve here: I'd wait a year or two for the wine's components to harmonize. Fresher than the 2008 bottling. (ST)" (05/2011) Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A perfumed and pretty nose speaks of essence of red Pinot fruit and subtle spice hints that carry over t...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Outstanding. So dry and elegant, with such a deft, delicate texture, yet so explosive in fruit and spice. Bone dry, it has notes of herbs, cinnamon, raspberries and white pepper. A gorgeous, complex wine, one to think about and discuss." (07/2011) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Monument Tree is beautifully direct, focused and articulate. Dark red cherries, flowers, smoke and minerals wrap around the palate in this firm, beautiful Pinot. This is one of the more structured wines in the Copain lin...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noit Estate from Santa Cruz Mountains is a more dark fruit driven effort that has good concentration, plenty of texture, medium to full-bodied richness and classy notes of black cherries, licorice and bouquet garni. It's drinking beautifully today and should keep nicely through 2026. (JD)" (10/2016)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Ovid is stunningly beautiful. At times it shows a little more depth, power and richness than the Hexameter, but both wines are compelling. Endless layers of fruit saturate the palate as this rich, intense wine conquers the heart and intellect. A totally vivid wine, the 2009 is even more impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Over the time I followed it, the 2009 gained finesse and elegance in the glass, which bodes quite well for the future. Intense graphite, crushed rocks and pencil shaving nua...

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(70.6% cabernet sauvignon, 24.9% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1.5% petit verdot): Knockout perfume of black fruits, violet and cedar. Broad, lush and rather open-knit, with lovely fullness to the expressive flavors of currant, cherry, plum, spices and flowers. Very suave, concentrated and fine-grained for a "second wine", finishing with even, building tannins and subtle suggestions of currant, graphite and wild herbs." (05/2012) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Prince of Heart...

2009 Sine Qua Non "The Thrill of Stamp Collecting" Syrah
Top Pick!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Syrah The Thrill Of impresses for its poise and underlying energy. Dark fruit, spices, licorice and violets sit on a core of firm tannin as this powerful wine opens up in the glass. Today, The Thrill Of comes across as very, very young. The intensity of the fruit and the oak are dominant at present. In another few years the wine should be spectacular. The Thrill Of … is 90% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 4% Viognier, all destemmed and mostly from estate owned vineyards. (AG)" (08/2012) 95 points Stephen Tanzer...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "The vines in the upper block of Ryan, rising to 2,500 feet, are just settling in. Jim Ryan, Calera’s vineyard manager, planted it in 1998 at a higher density than Calera’s other sites, most of which date to 1975. At first, this wine appears to be a big, extracted fruit bomb until, hours later, the tannins begin to breathe and the texture broadens, the fruit filling in the tannins on the sides of the mouth. A day later, the tannins and fruit have merged back into the middle of the wine, focused on dark, mineral intensity, on sce...

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Subtly aromatic nose of cherry, mocha, cinnamon and musky herbs. Smooth and expressive, with dark cherry and spice flavors and an appealing pliant texture. Nicely concentrated and seamless, with very good finishing breadth and cling. Aeration allows this wine to stretch out so give it an hour or so in a decanter if it's on your upcoming drinking list." (06/2011) K&L Notes: Always a favorite among affordable California Pinots, winemaker Wells Guthrie has does it again with the 2009....

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More open, upfront and sexy, the 2009 Grenache This is Not an Exit is comprised of 79% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 3% Viognier, and 3% Roussanne that spent 31 months in roughly 35% new French oak. Showing overflowing richness, with notions of incense, spice cake, potpourri, and creamy raspberry fruit, it is a full-bodied, voluptuous, and decadent Grenache geared for drinking over the coming decade or so. Drink now-2023. About as good as it gets across the board, these singular, incredible wines are the result of an obse...

94 points Wine Spectator: "Offers rich, smooth, layered flavors of blackberry, wild berry, plum and cassis. Full-bodied, yet graceful and elegant, this is most interesting on the finish, where the flavors glide along and pick up a subtle lift of spice and mocha. Drink now through 2024. " (04/2012) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(60% new oak; includes 2% petit verdot; a blend from several vineyard blocks featuring a higher percentage of rocky soil): Medium ruby. Blackberry, minerals, bitter chocolate, menthol and a crushed rock...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Wentzel emerges from the glass with heady dark cherries, spices, licorice and new leather. This is one of the more textured 2009s Pinots at Copain. Waves of fruit flow effortlessly to the long, pure finish. The Wentzel is slightly closed at present, but it shows fabulous length and should drink beautifully once the layers of flavor flesh out over time. The finish remains totally soft and inviting. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2021. (AG)" (02/2012) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine ...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An extended barrel-aged release, the 2009 Syrah This Is Not An Exit is 100% from the Santa Rita Hills Eleven Confessions Vineyard and checks in as a blend of 80% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 7% Roussanne and 1% Viognier that saw 41.5 months in 65% new French oak. Slightly exotic, with notions of kirsch, flower oil, smoked meats, licorice and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, loads of fruit and a blockbuster finish. More approachable than the 2010 extended barrel age Syrah, this beauty will...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense blue/purple-colored 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate possesses a complex bouquet of black cherry and black currant liqueur, forest floor, baking spice and subtle background oak. This rich, complex, full-bodied 2009 is just beginning to open and show tertiary nuances. It should continue to age well for 20-25 years. (RP)" (10/2013) 95 points Vinous: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is bursting with primal energy. Sweet floral notes meld into juicy red berries, spice box and cedar, all of which are laced toget...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The medium garnet colored 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Precious gives up wonderful licorice, tea and tapenade scents with nuances of cigars and earth. The full-bodied palate is rich, savory, firm and seductive, finishing long. (LPB)" (12/2018) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full, deep red. Elegant, floral aromas of raspberry, loam and cola. Then surprisingly tight on the palate, with ripe acids framing and energizing the reticent raspberry, floral and mineral flavors. Youthfully penetrat...

96 points Vinous: "Both 2009 Pinots are striking. The Pinot Noir Silver Belt Vineyard Cuvée Natalie is lifted, savory and aromatic, while the Bodega Headlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth is more overt and fruit-driven in style. Both wines remain quite primary, though, so readers who prefer more tertiary nuances will want to give the 2009s a few more years in the cellar. I am down to my last few bottles, and hope to have the patience to wait for the wines to enter their sweet spot. (AG)" (01/2015) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " The 2009 Pinot N...

92 points Wine Spectator: "Firm and muscular, with dense, rich dark berry, currant and blackberry fruit that's complex, layered and tannic, yet with a supple edge and a long finish of melted black licorice. (JL)" (10/2012)

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Cellar Selection 0 A dramatic wine, this is rich, full bodied and incredibly complex, laced with notes of ripe, sweet blackberries and crème de cassis, with a spirituous heat from relatively high alcohol. Its pedigree is clear throughout the entire tasting experience. This is a really gorgeous Cabernet, showing refinement and grace, but it is very tannic. Give it at least 10 years. *Cellar Selection*" (10/2012) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Flexes its muscle, with a dense, firm core of loamy earth, dark berry, black licorice, w...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard has a medium garnet color and gives up redcurrant and cranberry sauce with a core of cassis, red roses and Ceylon tea plus wafts of garrigue and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied and wonderfully elegant and fresh in the mouth, it has a beautiful grainy texture and long mineral finish. (LPB)" (12/2018) 92 points Vinous: "(15.5% alcohol): Bright medium red. Less expressive and less fruity on the nose than the 2010, offering scents of redcurrant, spices, herbs,...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains is an excellent introduction to the house style. Floral aromas lead to layers of dark red fruit in this juicy, accessible Pinot. This is the least expensive Pinot in this lineup but it offers terrific balance, and shows no ill effects whatsoever of being tasted among the vineyard-designate bottlings. Fleshy, supple and wonderfully radiant, it will also drink better young than most, if not all, of those wines. The Santa Cruz Mountains is made from barrels that didn’t make i...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Just beautiful to drink now, despite grippy tannins that give the ripe fruit an astringent mouthfeel. Based on Cabernet Franc, the wine’s flavors are simply delicious, offering waves of cherries, blueberries, plums and currants. Plenty of new oak adds toasty vanilla. Those tannins suggest pairing this wine with rich foods, such as lamb, but you don’t want to… " (06/2012) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(41% cabernet franc, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 24% merlot; 4.03 pH): Bright red-ruby. Crushed blackb...

92 points Vinous: "The 2009 Endre offers up hints of sage, rosemary, wild cherries and tobacco, all supported by vibrant yet-well-integrated tannins. Deceptively medium in body, the 2009 boasts considerable structure and intensity to match its highly appealing mid-weight personality. Like many 2009s, today the Endre is a bit tight and in need of another year or so of bottle age. The blend is 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petite Verdot. (AG)" (12/2012) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep ruby-r...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Though light in color, this is nonetheless intense and concentrated, marked by dried cherry, raspberry, mineral and dusty cedar notes. Ends with a tasty aftertaste of cherry and raspberry. Drink now through 2017." (06/2011)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Tight and well done, featuring complex dried currant, dried herb, cedar and tobacco notes. Most impressive for its elegance and balance. Moreover, 5,844 cases of wine this good at $54 a bottle is a notable accomplishment. Worth buying a handful or more. Drink now through 2022. (JL)" (10/2012) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru is a fleshy wine layered with dark red fruit, flowers, spices, new leather and mocha. This dark Cabernet Sauvignon is graced with considerable depth and tons of cl...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Howell Mountain offers up scents of graphite, mulberries, blueberries, vanillin, chocolate and forest floor. The wine’s full-bodied mouthfeel, moderately high tannins, and spicy, structured personality result in a masculine-styled 2009 that requires 4-5 years of cellaring. It should last for three decades. (RP)" (10/2013) 98 points Vinous: "The 2009 Howell Mountain (today known as Las Posadas) emerges from a parcel on the back of this stunning property surrounded by trees known as ‘the corral’ planted ...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Thorevilos displays a stunningly blue/purple color along with an exceptional nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur intermixed with espresso, white chocolate and violets. With unbelievable intensity, a great, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, a subtle hint of wood, but no hard edges, this is one 2009 that does not have that broodingly tannic structure that is common in this vintage. This sensational effort can be drunk early on or cellared for another three decades. (RP)" (10/2013) 98 points Vi...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque violet. Captivating bouquet offers scents of candied dark berries, licorice, violet, lavender and incense, with a spicy topnote of cracked pepper. Juicy, palate-staining black raspberry and mulberry flavors show a seamless texture and expand with air. The spice and floral notes repeat on the impressively long, sweet, penetrating finish. This wine would be superb with a Moroccan-spiced lamb dish; in the context of high-end New World Syrah it is a fantastic value." (11/2011) 91 points Robert P...

97-98 points James Suckling: "This is mind blowing stuff. Notes of mint, minerals, currants, blackberries, with hints of cedar. Full bodied, very velvety and chewy. This won't be out until 2013. Winemaker believes this could be the best one yet, and I have to agree." (02/2011) 98 points Vinous: "Shafer's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is all high notes. Sweet red plum and cherry notes meld into mint, spice and new leather, all supported by silky, polished tannins that add finesse to the plush fruit. Rich, opulent and beautifully textured throu...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Paderewski Vineyard is a new bottling from a site Smith developed for Bill and Liz Armstrong, the owners of Epoch. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Mourvedre are planted in separate plots but co-fermented. Layers of dark fruit meld into flowers, mint, sweet spices, menthol, eucalyptus and plums, with marvelous density and harmony. This shows superb aromatic complexity and tons of nuance to match its absolutely striking personality. It is a dazzling effort, especially for a young vineyard in just its thi...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There is no question the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is the most backward and brooding of the wines I tasted from Pride. Firm tannins frame an expressive core of dark red berries, licorice, scorched earth, tobacco, smoke and incense. Today, the 2009 is far too young to offer true pleasure, but it is unquestionably striking. Hints of iron, graphite and smoke add complexity on the finish supported by huge mountain tannins. The 2009 is super distinctive and loaded with personality. Anticipated maturity: 2019-202...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An explosive, captivating wine, the 2009 Futo bursts from the glass with an exotic melange of incense, tobacco, wild flowers, licorice and plums. Full-bodied and racy, the 2009 covers every inch of the palate with stunning depth and purity. The tannins are firm and quite present, but there is so much fruit they are nearly buried. Readers will be tempted to drink the 2009 young, but my impression is that patience will be highly rewarded. This is yet another striking, totally compelling wine. (AG)" (12/2012) 94 p...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "As with previous vintages, this rare wine spent 38 months in barrel. Smooth and supple, it’s a lush expression of purple and black fruits, generously endowed with darker flavors of smoke, tar, soy and licorice. There is a compelling, yet subtle, umami character overriding all else. It’s drinking quite beautifully now, but could age considerably longer. *Editors' Choice* (PG)" (02/2014)

97 points Vinous: "Four truly spectacular Napa Valley wines take things to another level. Blankiet’s 2009 Proprietary Red wraps around the palate with voluptuous, silky fruit and exceptional overall balance. Although delicious today, the 2009 will continue to thrill those lucky enough to own it for at least another 10-15 years. (AG)" (01/2015) 96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "(82% Cabernet Sauvignon): Good deep red-ruby. Captivating aromas of cassis, plum, mocha, smoke and wild herbs. Plush and seamless on the palate, with an elem...

99 points Vinous: "The 2009 Madrona Ranch is dark, virile and imposing, and yet it possesses exceptional balance and class to burn. New leather, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and spice notes abound. In some vintages, Madrona Ranch is impossibly tannic, and yet the 2009 is magnificent in its sense of poise and overall class. Vivid and finely cut, with tremendous drive, the 2009 will thrill readers lucky enough to own it. What a wine! (AG)" (06/2019) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Madrona Ranch has turned out to be spectacular. Lot...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Simply put, the 2009 James Berry Vineyard is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted from California, or anywhere for that matter. Bright, floral aromatics lead to expressive red fruit in this impossibly elegant, dazzling wine. A melange of rose petals, mint and licorice follows as the James Berry shows off its breathtaking clarity and finesse. Fine-grained, chalky tannins frame the exceptional finish. Frankly, I am surprised this is the first wine of the tasting. Where does one go from here? (AG)" (08...
