2004 Caymus "Special Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Beautiful wine, lush and soft in the style of this warm vintage. It’s immediately enjoyable for the wealth of cherries, blackberries and raspberries, with a decadent edge of melted milk chocolate. Oak adds extra dimensions of smoky vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and gingerbread. *Editors' Choice* " (08/2007) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even richer and fuller than the regular bottling, but at the same time hedonistically and voluptuously styled is the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection. Dense ruby/purple ...

2004 Arietta Napa Valley Claret

From the winery: "The first Arietta Claret, the 2004 is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 14% Petit Verdot from vineyards farmed by David Abreu at the top of Howell Mountain. The relatively high percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine great depth and staying power. Best held until 2008 and beyond."

2004 Jones Family "The Sisters" Napa Valley Red Blend

This wine, made by Napa powerhouse Heidi Peterson Barret, is sold out at the winery, but it is a must-have for fans of bold Napa reds. The "younger sister" to the Jones Family Cab, this is a blend of Cab and Cab Franc that practically bounces out of the glass with its exuberant blueberry and cassis aromas, but is kept grounded by sultry spice. There's a fine dusting of cocoa powder on the mid palate, and a firm structure and already-integrated tannins that show that while this may be the winery's second label, it's all about a first-rate experience.

2004 Piedrasassi California Syrah

92 points Robert Parker: "Fermented in Taransaud barrels and bottled with no fining or filtration, the 2004 Syrah is a deep, rich wine offering loads of smoky blackberry and cassis fruit as well as hints of creosote, tar, and incense. This heady, opulent 2004 can be drunk young or cellared for 7-8 years." (08/06)

2004 Coup de Foudre Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

98 points Wine Enthusiast: " *Editors' Choice* This wine is from John Schwartz, who partners with Heidi Peterson Barrett to make Amuse Bouche. For Coup de Foudre, he has paired with Danielle Price, MS, and wine director at Wynn Las Vegas, to produce this stunning Cabernet, which contains 12% Syrah. Grown in a 5-acre Stags Leap District vineyard, it shows stunning levels of blackberry and chocolate fruit enhanced with waves of smoky oak. Yet somehow, for all the opulence and power, there’s an almost weightless elegance to the wine. Sometimes cult Cabs can ...

2004 Turley "Pesenti" Paso Robles Zinfandel

90-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From Paso Robles’ limestone soils, the 2004 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard could pass for a Grenache-based southern Rhone with its striking minerality, pepper and kirsch liqueur-like notes. Full-bodied, but remarkably fresh (thanks to the limestone), it possesses 16+% alcohol, but that component is well-concealed by the wine’s fruit and structure. (RP)" (12/2005) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full red. Superripe aromas of brambly red fruits and pepper. Dense, sappy and sweet, with a ...

2004 Alban "Lorraine" Edna Valley Syrah

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "More layered and concentrated, with incredible depth and richness, the 2004 Syrah Lorraine comes from chalk and flint benefits and sees the standard extended barrel aging regime, with close to 42 months spent in oak. According to John, it’s the wine that’s the most ready to go, no matter the age. It hits all of my sweet spots with its brilliant aromatics, decadent texture and blockbuster finish. Showing traces of the marine-like saltiness that’s found in the Reva, it offers up a smorgasbord of aromas and flavors ...

2004 Roy J. Maier "St. Helena Road Vineyard" Napa Cabernet Sauvignon

Bursting through a color that is deep velvety red, this 2004 contains aromas of cassis, chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of black pepper. As promised by the classic aromas, the mouthfeel is rich, yet elegant, and the intense flavors are supported by luscious oak spice which sends the wine into orbit on the long finish. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petite Verdot.

2004 Waterstone Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Aromas of cedary oak, currants, black cherries and ripe plums suggest the fruit flavors to come, as does the intense, deep red color of the wine. Dense, mouth-filling cherries, plums, chocolate and tobacco marry with the oak nuances. The firm tannins underlying the wine's core provide balance, leading to a long, lingering finish.

2004 Araujo "Altagracia" Napa Valley Red Blend

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Despite having over 40-plus acres of vineyards in the northeasterly sector of Napa just south of Calistoga, the production at Araujo remains relatively limited, with the flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, producing between 1,600 and 2,200 cases of wine, and the second wine, the Altagracia, between 800 and 1,200 cases. Add to that another 1,000 cases of Sauvignon Blanc and 300-400 cases of Syrah, and there is just not a lot to go around given the greatness that can be achieved from this vineyar ...

2004 Tablas Creek "Panoplie" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

95 points from Robert Parker: "The 2004 Panoplie is a blend of 69% Mourvedre, 21% Grenache, and the rest mostly Syrah with a touch of Counoise. This wine is showing fabulously well out of bottle, with complex earthy, gamey, smoky notes of burning embers and charcoal as well as black cherry and black currant fruit. The wine is broad, full-bodied, powerful, and rich. It is a beautiful homage to the famed luxury cuvee called Jacques Perrin from Chateau Beaucastel. This wine should evolve for at least 12-15 or more years." (Aug. 2007) 94 points from Stephen ...

2004 Arietta "Variation One" Napa Valley Red Blend

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep medium ruby. Expressive aromas of black raspberry, licorice and dark chocolate, plus a medicinal menthol element. Juicy, tight and backward; this boasts excellent ripeness but is dominated by its acid structure and big tannins today. Like the 2004 Cabernet, it comes across as a bit spiky on the back and in need of patience. The tannins of the 2005 seem much finer. (ST) 90+" (06/2007)

2004 L'Aventure "Cuvée Coincidence" Paso Robles Red

The Templeton Gap area of Paso Robles, where the fruit for this wine was grown, ordinarily experiences a cooling, maritime trend in late-summer and early fall, creating huge diurnal temperature swings (100-degree days, cool, 55-degree nights). But in 2004, this trend did not kick in and the hot days gave way to simmering 80-degree nights. The results? All the grapes to ripened at the same time! Winemaker Stephan Asseo used this unique, coincidental opportunity to create this unique blend of co-fermented Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Only 10 ...

2004 Ramey "Pedregal" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another killer wine from David Ramey comes from the Pedregal Vineyard. This is one of my favorite sites for Cabernet Sauvignon in all of Napa, right on the Oakville crossroads on the western side of the valley, just adjacent to Rudd and slightly down the hill from Dalla Valle and the Phelps Backus vineyard. Rocky, iron-rich, red soils seem to produce terrific Cabernet Sauvignon, and certainly this is a knock-out. It cuts a bigger swath across the palate than the Merlot, but with no hard edges. By Montelena standards, it is a bit more powerful than usual (14.1% alcohol). These wines have an uncanny ability to age for 2-3 decades, and while the 2004 is slightly more forward and evolved than other vintages have been (2001 and 2002), it should last for 20-25 years. Slightly edgy acidity and serious, somewhat drying tannins suppress the wine's underlying sweetness of fruit today, making it tough going.
