1981 Gruaud Larose, St. Julien (1.5L) (nicked capsule, nicked label)

"A top success for the vintage, the 1981 Gruaud Larose is dark ruby, with a full intensity bouquet of ripe black currants, spicy oak, plums, leather, smoked meat, and violets. This wine is concentrated on the palate, with rich, tannic, lingering flavors. The tannins are melting away, and the wine is close to maturity. Anticipated maturity: Now- 2005. -Robert Parker, 'Bordeaux'

1981 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien

Wine Spectator: "A fine mature claret with an impressive freshness. Excellent ruby color with subtle aromas of cherry and green tobacco. This wine shows vivid fruit flavors with mineral undertones and a fine silky texture of tannins. Delicious now but should improve." (10/1994)

1981 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (high shoulder, past signs of seepage)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1981 is certainly an outstanding Yquem... Light golden, with a moderately intense bouquet of spicy, vanillin oak, fresh melons, and tropical fruit, this full-bodied Yquem has average acidity and a plump, viscous, somewhat precocious feel on the palate. Remarkably long and clean in the finish, it will develop relatively rapidly. (RP)" (01/1998)

1981 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1981 Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. After a two-year mission commissioned by American businessman John Goelet to find a new site with potential for making world-class wines, French-born winemaker Bernard Portet found and chose what would eventually be called the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley for its cool evenings and terrain. The 150-acre parcel that Goelet purchases became Clos du Val, a "small estate of a small Valley." Producing classically styled wines of balance, elegance and complexity has been the winery's goal ever since.

1981 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1981 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (94JG). John Gilman: "As I have written in the past, the 1981 vintage at Ducru-Beaucaillou is the great, sleeper vintage here in the decade of the 1980s and this is one of the top wines produced on the Gironde in ’81. This was the first time I had drunk it out of magnum and the wine is stellar in its larger format. The nose wafts from the glass in a youthful blend of sweet dark berries, cassis, cigar wrapper, a hint of the chipotles to come with further bottle age, a beautiful base of gravel, gentle fresh herb nuances and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and beautifully balanced, with a great core of fruit, moderate, seamless tannins and outstanding length and grip on the focused and complex finish. There is absolutely nothing “off vintage” about the superb 1981 Ducru. Drink between 2016-2065." (08/2016)
