1978 Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1978 Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Matanzas Creek were among the pioneers of grapegrowing and winemaking in Sonoma County's Bennett Valley, near Santa Rosa. Established in 1977 by Sandra McIver, the winery's early days produced some breathtaking wines that took this quiet area surrounded by mountains and launched it onto the wine scene. The 1978 vintage was the inaugural vintage and the winemaker was none other than the legendary Merry Edwards who stayed in residence until 1984. Another one of those 1970's California wines that makes you pause in wonder.

1978 Petrus, Pomerol
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Petrus, Pomerol (92JG). John Gilman: "The 1978 Château Lafleur-Pétrus is one of the finest Right Bank wines I have tasted from this vintage. The wine offers up a lovely and complex nose of cherries, nutskin, a beautiful base of soil tones, pomegranate, a touch of soy, fresh herb tones and a fine topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very nicely balanced, with plenty of depth at the core, gentle tannins, tangy acids and excellent focus and grip on the long and complex finish. There is absolutely no sense here of imperfect ripeness and the wine is a very fine, svelte middleweight in its plateau of peak drinkability." (05/2016)

1978 Kenwood "Jack London Vineyard" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Kenwood "Jack London Vineyard" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 1976, Kenwood winery has produced a Cabernet Sauvignon from a historic vineyard located on the ranch that was at one time owned by the celebrated author Jack London. Robert Parker described Kenwood's Sonoma Valley Cabernet from 1978 as "full-bodied, with dense, chocolatey, chewy flavors, soft tannins that have largely melted away, and a lusty finish. This enjoyable wine has clearly demonstrated the ability to evolve in a positive fashion."

1978 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (93RP, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This has a very expressive nose, a touch of greenness but ebullient black fruits, tar, graphite and cedar all with very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied, quite sweet and silky on the entry with good acidity, notes of black cherries, iodine and an almost sorbet like character towards the finish that shows a surprising amount of glycerine. This is certainly a great success for the vintage, kudos to the late-Michel Delon for fashioning such great wines in modest growing seasons. Drink now-2025. (NM-Wine Journal)" (09/2009)

1978 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1978 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien (90JG, 90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An outstanding 1978, Ducru-Beaucaillou's effort displays a fragrant, well-developed bouquet of licorice, earth, black currants, and underbrush. Rich for a 1978, with none of the vegetal character now found in many wines of this vintage, this fully mature, medium-bodied wine exhibits soft tannin, excellent concentration and purity, and a sweet, elegant finish. 1978 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1978 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruit, and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding complexity, the high tannin level may never fully melt away. (RP)" (10/1995)

1978 Freemark Abbey "Bosche" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1978 Freemark Abbey "Bosche" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The world famous Cabernet Bosché vineyard is located on the Rutherford Bench, west of Grgich Winery, up against the Mayacamas hills. The wines from this vineyard are typically elegant and approachable, and express aromas of cedar, berry fruit and dark cherry. And, boy, do they age! Robert Parker praised this era of Freemark wine in his Wine Buyer's Guide, 7th Edition: "In the 1970s and 1980s, Freemark Abbey was a top-notch winery renowned for their fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon Bosche Vineyard."

1978 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Musigny Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Musigny Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes (93BH). Allen Meadows - Burghound: "I have had the '78 Musigny on a number of occasions and I have never quite understood why it is not better appreciated as it is both wonderfully complex aromatically and there is a silky, indeed velvety quality to the rich flavors that I find utterly seductive. No, it isn't in the league of the all-time de Vogüé greats but it's a fine effort that is drinking perfectly now and in good storage, it should be capable of remaining at this level for years. Note: I have relatively consistent notes though as with any wine at 40+ years of age, there will always be some variability." (04/2018)

1978 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1978 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac. According to Michael Broadbent: "Notably deep, intense appearance, a gloriously exciting five-star bouquet, medium-sweet, full-bodied. A powerful, spicy wine with good flesh and fruit." Decanter's vintage note on 1978: "A classic Bordeaux vintage of average sign, so much smaller than the vintage of the 80s & 90s. While they never had the pretensions of '70 or '75, the have probably given more pleasure for longer than either."

1978 Keenan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Keenan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The first vintage of the newly eponymous Robert Keenan Winery, after Keenan purchased and renamed the defunct, pre-Prohibition Conradi vineyard on Spring Mountain. An historic specimen of 1970s Napa Valley Cabernet. "True to form, this smells attractive..." The Wine Spectator found in a 1992 horizontal tasting of 1978 California Cabernet, while noting that it had not yet resolved its tannin and oak at that date. (11/92) More recent consumer reviews (from 2011 on) indicate that this wine is holding up well.
