About this producer: "Shenandoah Vineyards in Plymouth, CA, was founded in 1977 by Shirley and Leon Sobon. They moved from Los Altos, California, where Leon was a Senior Scientist with the Lockheed Research Lab. Leon's gift for home winemaking led him to leave Lockheed and begin a new career as a Winemaker. The selection of a winery site in the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County was well researched. Leon and Shirley and their six children moved to the old Steiner Ranch, outside Plymouth, CA, planted a vineyard, and converted the old stone garage to the ...

Winery notes: Casino Mine Ranch is an estate vineyard located in the Sierra Foothills of Amador County. The winery is owned and managed by fourth-generation brothers, Jim and Rich Merryman. The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in stainless steel, aged sur lie with a small percentage of new oak, to preserve freshness and add roundness to the palate. This wine could carry you through a meal from oysters on the half shell, to roasted free-range chicken with local vegetables and wrapping it up with an Amalfi lemon tart.

Winery note: "From the amazing 2018 vintage comes this well focused, medium body Amador Zinfandel, with the majority of the grapes coming from our exciting new, sustainably farmed Jackson Valley estate. This zesty richly fruited wine is bursting with lush flavors and aromas of black and red fruit that define its appeal. Smooth elegant and inviting, this easy drinking offering is perfect with all your outdoor grilling and BBQ."

This wine has aromas of melon, hazelnut and green tea, but really comes alive in the palate. Surprisingly round and full, the softness on the palate gives way to a long, lingering backbone of acidity and minerality that finishes slowly and refreshingly. Aged in a mix of neutral French oak and stainless steel drums.Whole cluster pressed, with a small sulfur addition. Fermented in one neutral French Oak barrel and one Stainless drum, and kept on the lees for 10 months. 53 cases produced. 12.4% ABV. A relatively rare variety from Southern Italy, this Fala...

92 points Wine Spectator: "This epitomizes fine Sierra Foothills Zinfandel, offering vibrant, briary raspberry, smoked pepper and wild sweet anise flavors that stretch out on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2023. *No. 45 Top 100 Wines of 2018, Smart Buy* (TF) " (11/2018) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A velvety texture and extremely concentrated black-fruit flavors make this full-bodied wine delicious to savor. It has beautiful big tannins that are well integrated, luxurious blackberry, sage and cedar flavors, plus great length on the finish. *Editor'...

Portalupi is a little Cal-Ital focused winery founded by a husband and wife in Healdsburg, California (where they run a swanky little tasting room--look for the classic Vespa scooter). As an honorary Cal-Ital varietal wine, Zinfandel fits into the Portalupi plan quite nicely. Here's the winemaker note on the new 2017 release: "Gorgeous Zinfandel from the famed Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County. This wine toes the line of opulence and juiciness without going overboard. Juicy dark berry flavors, hints of cola and mocha, good acid and a rich mouthfeel high...

Winemaker's Notes: "A fresh and different take on Foothills Barbera, this wine expresses fresh, fruity aromatics and is lively across the palate. Tannins extracted from the stems during fermentation provide a counterpoint of earthy, herbal aromas, as well as imparting distinctive, fine tannins on the finish. Certified organically grown grapes from the Fairplay AVA.Fermented in two lots, one de-stemmed, and one whole cluster. The whole clusters are gently placed in a covered stainless steel tank, where they undergo a 20 day semi-carbonic fermentation, aft...

2018 Sabelli-Frisch "Milk Fed" Sierra Foothills Marsanne
New!
Winemaker's Notes: "My limited edition series is an ongoing experiment with making more aromatic and fuller whites with some skin-contact and in clay amphoras. The ancient Georgians calls this when the wine “lays with its mother”. So, I decided to call this series Milk Fed. The Marsanne grape is a Rhône variety that has a long history of pairing with Roussane, but here I wanted to let it speak with its own voice and allow it’s mineral and richer oily fruit textures to come out for this one-off. These Marsanne grapes were crushed, put into clay amphoras...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Bold, bright flavors and an almost electric texture stretch this wine as taut as a guitar string and make it enormously fun to drink. While many Zinfandels are fat and taste sweet, this one brings wonderful tight acidity and a lively layer of fine tannins to make it virtually vibrate across the tongue. With all that nerve, it will improve if cellared through at least 2020. (JG)" (08/2016) 92 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Here is a solidly structured and deeply filled wine that capably reminds how good Fiddletown Zins can be, a...

In keeping with the growing trend of many fine boutique producers in northern California, Dewey's makes low-intervention, small-lot, single-site expressions from some of the Golden State's unheralded yet exceptional vineyards. Winemaker's notes: "In 2018 we jumped at the opportunity to work with a couple tons of cab franc from Barsotti. The grapes were fermented native, 100% whole-cluster, and punched down twice a day with two bare feet. We pressed gently to a combination of neutral oak and stainless steel barrels. Other than sulfur the wine received no ...

*Natural Wine* From the producer: "Our winemaking philosophy and cellar practices have not changed since we made our first wine in 2003. Our vineyards are farmed sustainably/organic/biodynamic and in our cellar our list of ingredients has never ventured beyond minimal effective Sulphur. We have occasionally skipped the Sulphur and have always done so on our Pet Nat wines. But here we have Syrah, picked at the optimum balance and crushed to concrete, with minimal punch down by hand. We pressed off to a mix of neutral and 1-3 year old French Oak barrels. N...

After a career in the restaurant business, Scott Schultz switched to wine when he moved to Napa from Chicago and started overseeing the wine program at Thomas Keller's Bouchon. He soon launched his own brand Jolie-Laide, which loosely means "pretty-ugly" in French and is a term of endearment for something unconventionally beautiful. Winery notes: "The clusters are left whole and started by carbonic maceration, which lends its distinctive high tone appeal, then eventually crushed by foot and finished whole cluster for skin contact and extraction. Pressed ...

Ridge Vineyards already had an impressive stable to gorgeous old-vine sites, but they don't rest on their laurels. The Boatman vineyard is a relatively new addition to the line-up, yet it bears all the hallmark class and finesse of Ridge's other wines. Here's how the winery describes the vineyard: "2014 was our first release from the Boatman Ranch, located in Sonoma County between our Lytton Springs and Geyserville vineyards. In the early 1970s, Tim Boatman planted fifteen acres of zinfandel on the steep hillsides that surround his house. The rocky, east...

Winery notes: Ron Mansfield farms this vineyard in the Apple Hill region of El Dorado, sitting at 3000ft elevation with cooler nighttime temperatures to preserve acidity. The vines are head trained on a vertical cordon and dry farmed even in the warmest of years. Foot tread and fermented 100% whole cluster this is a wine that is bottled early to be enjoyed during the Fall months. Aromatics of Asian plum sauce with hints of dried strawberry in the background lead to a palate of bright red fruit and mouthwatering acidity.

* Listed as No.1 US Rosé by the Wall Street Journa! (6/2020)* Winemaker's Notes: "This Bandol-inspired Rosé is a beauty, featuring aromas and flavors of citrus and stone fruits, highlighted by cherry, watermelon rind, grapefruit, nectarine and peach flavors. The Wine has firm balancing acidity and both inviting aromas and a long finish on the palate. The medium bodied frame is layered, textured, balanced and elegant, and the wine will drink well on release or age for 5-7 years. It is a perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of seafood, pasta and fowl a...

94 points Vinous: "A new wine in the range, the 2017 Red Wine Shake Ridge is a blend of co-fermented Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Viognier from Ann Kramer's ranch in Amador County. Red cherry, plum, tobacco and cedar all flesh out in a deep, wonderfully expressive wine from Jolie-Laide. The 2017 offers a bit more richness than, for example, the Grenache in this range, and yet it is still very much in line with the brisk, energetic style Scott Schultz favors. The purity of the fruit is striking. (AG)" (05/2019)

From the distributor: "The Withers is a new project focusing on high elevation, cool climate sites that yield exceptional, nuanced and balanced red and rose wines drawing from Rhone varietals grown in the Sierra Foothills and Mendocino County, as well as Pinot Noir grown in the Anderson and Green Valleys and the Sonoma Coast. The Withers was founded by Andrew Tow, a longtime collector and advocate of food friendly, understated, lower alcohol yet deeply flavorful wines, and features as its winemaker David Low, co-founder and winemaker at highly acclaimed ...

Winery notes: We began bottling Roussanne on an annual basis in 2001. This bottling originates from a vineyard site we helped establish and develop between Auburn and Foresthill called the Monarch Mine Vineyard. It is planted with a clone of the Roussanne grape that originates from a Chave family parcel on the hill at Hermitage. This is a difficult variety to grow. This 2012 has classic Roussanne characteristics: Straw golden color; with exquisite quince, honey-nut, and beeswax aromas. It has a very rich and silky mouth feel from barrel fermentation and ...

Wine Enthusiast: "This light to medium-bodied wine shows a greenish tint in the light-gold color, vanilla and butter aromas, and a rich but not overripe flavor of lemon and butter. (JG)" (12/2019) K&L Notes: Winemaker's notes: "I think of this wine as the lighter side of Viognier, but don't mistake that for a wine lacking in beautiful aromatic characteristics. Our 2018 Viognier comes from 2,100' elevation planted in decomposed granite soils, which both lead to beautiful aromatics of rose petal and stone fruit and playful mid-palate of peaches, nectarin...

91 points Wine & Spirits: "From one of the Sierra Foothills’ most respected vineyards, this starts out leathery, then turns electric, lifted and bright. The red cherry flavors flash sweet and sour, almost citrusy, with a peppery crunch and mildly floral, nimble tannins. For smoked chicken." (02/2020) K&L Notes: Hardy Wallace crafts some of the most unique natural wines in California today. With a loyal following that has created a near-fanatical demand, the Dirty & Rowdy wines are tough to get your hands on, so grab them when you can.
