2016 Kalinda Paso Robles Red Blend
Top Pick!
We can tell you this much: our Kalinda private label hooks you up with awesome wine at a fraction of what you'd otherwise pay for this exact same wine under its normal label. While we have to remain quiet about the source of this lovely red blend from Paso Robles, which contains 36% Syrah, 22% Primitivo (Zinfandel), 19% Grenache, and a few other grapes, we can tell you that it sells elsewhere at a higher premium. Get it while it lasts.

Vinous: "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles shows just how appealing the vintage is. Aging in steel and bottling early brings out the aromatic, juicy side of Cabernet. The 2016 is not exactly complex, but it is absolutely delicious. It will make a terrific house pour over the next few years. (AG)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: Wine Advocate: "Readers looking for killer values need look no further than this Foxglove releases from Jim and Bob Varner." (JD, 10/2016) Great wines at very good prices. That is what you get from Foxglove. This is a side project fr...

Wine Enthusiast: "Broad aromas of caramelized red cherry and dried herbs make for a pleasantly savory entry to this bottling from the historic estate. There is a solid amount of herbal expression on the palate, where the dried oregano sets off the tangy black-plum flavors. (MK)" (04/2019)

Two winemakers who were already producing some serious Central Coast wines, Curt Schalchlin founder of Sans Liege and Andrew Jones who started Field Recordings, teamed up to launch The Fabelist Wine Co. Winery notes: "Vibrant black currant, cedar and vanilla hit your tongue, as you're warmed by the comforts of mint and eucalyptus. A strong finish wraps you in a fond embrace."

Josh Raynolds writes: "Established in 1981, Adelaida is one of Paso Robles’ oldest high-end wineries. Quality continues to climb and, in my opinion, has never been better. With 168 acres of vines spread across seven mostly high-altitude sites, Adelaida has always had the potential to make some of the best wines of the region. I first noticed an uptick in complexity and balance in the wines in the early 2000s, and things accelerated with the arrival of winemaker Jeremy Weintraub in 2012, after a stint at Seavey, in Napa Valley. While the entry-level wines...

91 points Vinous: "Pale gold. Mineral-accented orange, pear and white flowers on the perfumed nose, along with a gingery nuance that adds spicy lift. Taut citrus and orchard fruit flavors unfurl slowly and show hints of bitter quinine and anise that build slowly with air. Shows very good depth as well as energy on the finish, which echoes the mineral and citrus fruit notes. (JR)" (09/2018) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Patelin de Tablas Blanc wafts from the glass with notes of rose water, preserved citrus and Provence herbs. On the...

Winemaker's Notes: "Looking back on 2016, we’re quickly reminded of the year’s ideal growing conditions whenever we open a bottle of this Classic Pinot Noir. Warm afternoons and cool nights played a big part in providing us with balanced, ripe fruit grown on our Estate Twin Creeks Vineyards. At harvest, we crushed and destemmed the Pinot Noir before cold-soaking it in fermenting bins. This allowed us to extract more color before fermentation starts. As the wine fermented, we performed three punch-downs a day then racked the free run wine into barrel. Aft...

2009 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend
Back In Stock!
98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Simply put, the 2009 James Berry Vineyard is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted from California, or anywhere for that matter. Bright, floral aromatics lead to expressive red fruit in this impossibly elegant, dazzling wine. A melange of rose petals, mint and licorice follows as the James Berry shows off its breathtaking clarity and finesse. Fine-grained, chalky tannins frame the exceptional finish. Frankly, I am surprised this is the first wine of the tasting. Where does one go from here? (AG)" (08...

91 points Vinous: "Youthful violet. Smoke-accented cherry and cassis qualities on the fragrant nose, along with a hint of toasty oak in the background. Juicy and energetic on the palate, showing spicy lift to the bitter cherry and dark berry flavors, which become deeper with air. Shows very good clarity and finishes with good, spicy tenacity and a touch of dusty tannins. (AG)" (09/2018) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Black plum and black cherry meet with dried fennel frond on the nose of this blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Petit Verdo...

Andrew Jones learned to make wine from the ground up. He started as a vine nursery fieldman, planting and planning vineyards for wineries all over California. This gave him firsthand knowledge of nearly every vineyard on the Central Coast and a knack for finding "diamonds in the rough." Meanwhile, he was building friendships with some great California growers, who'd often offer him small lots of their best grapes on the side. From these beginnings he has built a catalog of delicious, affordable wines that hum with personality.

92 points James Suckling: "This has a very pretty, spicy nose with black pepper, brambleberry pie, dried thyme and sage, iodine, licorice and bark. Medium-bodied with bright acidity, tangy fruit and a fresh, medium-chewy finish. Drink now or hold." (05/2019) 91 points Vinous: "Lurid ruby-red. Powerful, spice-accented aromas of dark berries and violet, joined by a smoky quality that builds in the glass. Chewy and broad on the palate, offering sappy black currant and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of dark chocolate. Youthfully tannic on the finish, wh...

90-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From Paso Robles’ limestone soils, the 2004 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard could pass for a Grenache-based southern Rhone with its striking minerality, pepper and kirsch liqueur-like notes. Full-bodied, but remarkably fresh (thanks to the limestone), it possesses 16+% alcohol, but that component is well-concealed by the wine’s fruit and structure. (RP)" (12/2005) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full red. Superripe aromas of brambly red fruits and pepper. Dense, sappy and sweet, with a...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 48% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 37% Mourvèdre, the 2015 Vertigo is another blockbuster 2015 from Jensen. It’s deep ruby color is followed by a sweet bouquet of crème de cassis, black raspberries, strawberries, violets, and chocolaty oak. It’s a round, supple, incredibly sexy GSM that has full-bodied richness, loads of power and depth, yet also shows the more charming, forward style of the 2015 vintage in Paso Robles. Drink it anytime over the coming decade." (08/2017) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Comprised of...

2007 Saxum "Bone Rock - James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Syrah
Back In Stock!
99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Bone Rock, which comes from the James Berry Vineyard (82% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, and the rest Grenache, also aged 28 months in a combination of smaller barrels, demi-muids, and pungeons), is super as well. Like its late-released sibling, it has an inky/purple color to the rim and an extraordinary, soaring set of aromatics consisting of spring flowers, pepper, graphite, blackberry and blueberry fruit with hints of raspberry and licorice and jus de viande as well. The extraordinary freshness and elegance of...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a superb site, the blockbuster 2007 Syrah James Berry Vineyard boasts an opaque purple color in addition to extraordinary aromas of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, blackberries, pepper, and bouquet garni, a fabulous texture, and a finish that lasts for 50+ seconds. (RP)" (02/2010) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Glass-staining ruby. Vibrant red and blue fruit aromas are complicated by Asian spices, smoky minerals and potpourri. Strikingly sweet, with nervy raspberry and boysenberry fl...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Citizen checks in as 57% Syrah and 43% Petite Sirah that spent 22 months in 65% new French oak (mostly larger barrels). It has a sweet nose of jammy blackberries, incense, and ground pepper that gives way to a rich, plush, seamless red that has sweet tannin, a rounded, voluptuous texture and a great finish. It’s another awesome wine from winemaker Aaron Jackson." (11/2018) 95 points Vinous: " Vivid purple. Powerful, mineral-accented blackberry, blueberry and floral oil aromas are complemented by cola, licorice and woods...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc from this producer is a complex and lively white wine to balance their rich red portfolio. Aromas of jalapeño, green herbs and wet cement meet with nectarine on the nose, while the zesty palate combines bell pepper, lime peel, peach and tropical fruit. *Editors’ Choice* (MK)" (07/2019)

91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted from barrel, the 2017 Zinfandel Paso Robles is also very promising, offering up youthful primary aromas of ripe cherries and currants. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with melting tannins and a pure, juicy, fruit-driven profile. In 2017, Ridge was able to pick their entire block of the Benito Dusi vineyard in one go, meaning that all the grapes arrived at the Monte Bello winery the day that they were harvested, and that will also be the practice going forward. While the ...

93 points James Suckling: "Quiet classic with aromas of spiced red-plum compote and brown tea, baking spices and plum cake, as well as red flowers. The palate has a very smooth and plush array of nutty, ripe tannins that carry bright red fruit into the finish. Pure zinfandel. Drink or hold." (10/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Zinfandel Paso Robles is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of ripe blackberries, plum preserves and rich spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, lavish and velvety, with an ample core of ripe, s...

2015 Ridge Vineyards "Benito Dusi Ranch" Paso Robles Zinfandel
Back In Stock!
93 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Precise Zinfandel fruit sits amidst an attractive bit of vanillin oak in the deep and well-defined aromas of this immediately inviting Zin, and the wonderfully pure berrylike qualities that mark its start are at center stage all the way to the end. Along the way, the wine teases with subtle briar and graphite complexities, and, if never in the camp of powerhouse versions, it exhibits more than enough stamina and staying power. Balanced to firmness and lightly tannic, it is easy to like now but promises to be even better if ...

2017 Austin Hope Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $50) (Previously $50)
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This bottling remains as impressive and delicious as it did upon debut two vintages ago. Aromas of black cherry, hickory smoke and vanilla cookie lead into a palate of brown sugar, sea salt, caramel and black cherry foam, all framed by polished tannins and just enough acidity. (MK)" (12/2019) K&L Notes: The Hope family came to the Paso Robles area in 1978, and today Hope Family Wines produces several brands with grapes from their own estate as well as grower partners. Winery notes: "Dark ruby in color, the 2017 Austin Hope C...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Perhaps my favorite grand cru site for Central Coast Syrah is the James Berry Vineyard, which is planted in pure limestone soil on the west side of Paso Robles. Seventy-five percent whole clusters are used. The riveting, opaque purple-tinged 2004 Syrah James Berry Vineyard displays a sumptuous bouquet of scorched earth, blackberries, cassis, tar, and licorice. It cuts a full-bodied swath across the palate with multiple layers of flavor, a huge texture, and fabulous freshness as well as vibrancy, no doubt because ...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Checking in as a blend of 46% Grenache, 34% Mourvèdre and 20% Counoise that spent 24 months in barrel, the 2013 Oublie 24 offers an open, sexy style in its mulled red fruits, dried flowers, spice and dried soil aromas and flavors. Sporting a semi translucent ruby color, this full-bodied beauty has no hard edges, a beautiful core of sweet fruit, and an endearing hard to resist personality that will drink well for 5-7 years. (JD)" (08/2016)

From winemaker Andrew Jones comes this esoteric delight, a lightly sparkling (and lightly colored) rosé of Cabernet Franc made in the pétillant naturel style. Timing is everything with this wine as it must be bottled and capped with just the right amount of remaining natural sugars to continue fermentation (thus, creating captured carbonation). It's not an easy trick to pull off, but when it goes right, it really goes right.
Price: $19.99

97-99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Hold onto your hats with this one, the 2014 My Favorite Neighbor Proprietary Blend will see 24 months in barrel, and there will only be a single cuvee in 2014. This insanely good barrel sample gives up serious, inky, yet pure notes of violets, licorice, black raspberries, creme de cassis and graphite to go with building tannin, a stacked mid-palate and blockbuster length. I'd like to have a case of it in the cellar. (JD)" (08/2016)

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Very light pink with a hint of yellow in the glass, this blend of 76% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 4% Counoise from nine vineyards offers aromas of chalky lemon and nectarine on the delicate nose. The texture is grippy with chalk on the palate, offering flavors of strawberry, pluot flesh and a spritz of citrus. (MK)" (06/2019) 91 points Vinous: "Light bright orange. Ripe red berries, nectarine, orange zest and a sexy floral quality on the perfumed nose. Silky in texture and well-concentrated, offering juicy citrus and pit fru...

2008 Saxum "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend
Back In Stock!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I had previously reviewed the 2008 Saxum James Berry Vineyard from a tasting at the winery, so it was enlightening to get to sit down, and drink through a full bottle. A blend of 52% Grenache, 31% Mourvèdre, and 17% Syrah, aged for 19 months in puncheons and smaller barrels, it presents an unabashedly Californian profile that oozes sweet fruit and flesh, but balances it with a seamless, weightless texture and perfect balance. Notes of sweet crème de cassis, raspberry, smoked meats, and flowers all soar from the glass and are follo...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 My Favorite Neighbor is also terrific and I suspect would cost 2-3 times its going rate if it was from Napa Valley. It's also the more elegant, perfumed, red-fruited release compared to the darker fruited Harvey and Harriet release. Classy notes of black raspberries, spice box, white flowers, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf all emerge from the glass of this medium to full-bodied red, which offers a seamless texture, fine tannins, and a great finish." (10/2019) 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A barrel...

93 points Vinous: "Dark red cherries, mint, sage, tobacco, licorice and game take shape in the 2011 Esprit de Tablas. The mid-weight, translucent style is quite Burgundian. Distinctly wild, Mourvèdre-inflected nuances are laced throughout the expressive, perfumed finish. The blend is 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Counoise. (AG)" (07/2014) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The only 2011 reviewed here, the 2011 Esprit de Tablas is meaty, earthy and chewy, with its Mourvedre component front and center. Made from 40% Mourvedre, 30%...

2015 Aaron Paso Robles Petite Sirah
Back In Stock!
93 points Vinous: "Bright purple. Smoke-tinged cherry and blueberry compote aromas show excellent clarity, and a mocha element sneaks in as the wine stretches out. Sweet and pliant in the mouth, offering densely packed yet lively red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a hint of five-spice powder. Shows impressive energy on the broad, chewy finish, which is firmed by building tannins and sharpened by a late jolt of juicy acidity. (JR)" (09/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The inky colored 2015 Petite Sirah offers classic sweet black and plum fr...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A wine that flirts with perfection is the 2016 Estate Cuvée, which is 52% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Petit Verdot, all of which spent 15 months in new French oak. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with a masculine bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, liquid rock-like minerality, and lead pencil shavings, it reminds me of a top 2010 Pomerol with its opulence, power, and purity. Hitting the palate with full body, a layered, seamless, multi-dimensional texture, and present yet polished tannins, this beauty is one of the ...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the two 2016s I was able to taste, the 2016 Syrah G2 Vineyard is a true head turner that checks in with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Thrilling notes of blackberries, plums, peppery spice, and caramelized meats all give way to a full-bodied red that has plenty of richness, yet excels on its incredible finesse, elegance, and purity of fruit. It’s another awesome wine from Don Burns that readers should snatch up! I wrote last year: "Readers interested in finding the next up and coming superstar in Paso Robles need...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to 2015 reds, of which there are just two I hadn’t tasted from bottle, the 2015 Esprit de Tablas checks in as a blend of 49% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 21% Syrah, and the rest Counoise that spent 22 months in larger, neutral oak foudres. This layered, ripe, even sexy red offers impressive notes of kirsch and blackberry fruits, notes of lavender, spice, and flowers, full body, and a textured, lengthy, pure finish. It will keep for 15+ years, although it will be approachable with just short-term cellaring." (11/2018) 92 point...

94 points Vinous: "Vivid ruby-red. Expansive, spice-accented aromas of red and blue fruit liqueur, Asian spices and candied flowers are lifted by a minerally nuance. Silky, broad and alluringly sweet in the mouth, offering sappy black raspberry, boysenberry and lavender pastille flavors that become more energetic with air. In a seamless, elegant style. A refreshing jolt of minerality adds focus and cut to the impressively long, youthfully tannic finish. (JR)" (11/2017) 93 points Wine & Spirits: "The 2014 vintage was the third drought year in a row at T...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Oublie is a blockbuster, ranking with the finest wines in the vintage. Based on 56% Grenache, 22% Mourvèdre, 22% Syrah, brought up in 50% neutral barrels, its vivid purple color is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, yet elegant red that has a great nose of cassis, blackberries, white flowers, leafy herbs, and hints of pepper. It packs some muscle yet stays flawlessly balanced." (10/2019)

2007 Saxum "Booker Vineyard" Paso Robles Syrah
Back In Stock!
99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2007 Booker is 95% Syrah and 5% Grenache (from Heartstone Vineyard) and was completely destemmed. Still inky black in color, with killer notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, charcoal and licorice, it's young, full-bodied, elegant and silky, with sensational purity. It’s another awesome wine by this incredible talented winemaker." (07/2018) 99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The inky/purple-hued 2007 Booker Vineyard (95% Syrah and 5% Grenache) boasts a floral-dominated bouquet with camphor, blackberry, roasted meat, a...

Winemaker Notes Dark ruby/purple core, lighter in color toward the rim. Moderate plus viscosity with slow forming, slightly stained tears. Highly aromatic with ripe black cherry and cassis fruit, vanilla and cinnamon spice with cedar, graphite, dried autumn leaf and licorice notes over an attractive toasted oak background. Dry, full-bodied with ripe, complex black fruit of cherry and blackcurrants layered with baking spice on the entry. The mid palate has continuing ripe fruit with savory dried leaf elements, cedar, anise, camphor and a bit of cocoa surr...

93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Firm, structured, and showing the coolness of the vintage beautifully, the 2010 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel (45% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 21% Syrah, and 4% Counoise) is a fresh, focused, and balanced red that has loads of crushed berry like fruit, licorice, sappy underbrush, and floral nuances, as well as superb underlying minerality, all emerging from the glass. Quite tight and firm on the palate, with excellent purity, juicy acidity, and a youthful, energetic feel, this will most likely require 3-5 years of bottle age o...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A notch up on the richness scale, yet still impeccably balanced and light on the palate, the 2011 Estate Cuvee is 48% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Petit Verdot. Deep, rich and layered, with thrilling cassis, blackberry, lead pencil, spice, spring flowers and smoke, it flows onto the palate with awesome purity, a straight focused profile and sweet tannin that emerge through the mid-palate and finish. This is not a blowsy, overdone effort, and is seamless and incredibly drinkable. It needs 2-3 years of bot...

Producer's notes: "Cobblestone streets and dark alleyways, leather guitar strap, Creme de Violette, fertile soil, poison ring, traversing the Alps."
Price: $39.95

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Ripe peach, honeyed citrus, salty minerality, and white flower notes all emerge from the 2017 Willow White, a beautifully textured, layered, balanced white. I'd drink it over the coming 3-5 years, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve longer." (10/2019)

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Blackberry, blueberries, tar, toasted spice, and chocolate notes all emerge from the 2016 Petite Sirah (there’s 12% Syrah in the blend) and it's ripe and polished on the palate, with full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and a great finish." (10/2019)

95 points Vinous: "Glass-staining ruby. Complex, explosive aromas of ripe red berries, incense, peppery spices and fresh flowers develop a smoky mineral quality with air. Juicy, densely packed and precise on the palate, offering sappy black raspberry, cherry compote and spicecake flavors that show a very suave blend of richness and finesse. Tightens up steadily on the extremely long, incisive finish, which is framed by subtle, fine-grained tannins. (JR)" (09/2016) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Like the Esprit release, the 2013 Panoplie is m...

95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another blockbuster barrel sample is the 2014 GSM Vertigo EXT, which is 68% Syrah, 26% Mourvedre and the rest Grenache (there's less Grenache than normal in the 2014). Violets, cassis, licorice and black raspberries all flow to a rich, concentrated blend that's much more supple, rounded and forward than the 2015, while still showing plenty of grip and focus.
