Robert Parker writes: "The black rocks of Obsidian Ridge in Lake County, at an elevation of 2,600 feet, make it one of the more distinctive terroirs in Northern California. Geologists have said that the soils have to be a minimum of 10,000 years old, which perhaps explains the high quality of these wines, which are selling at modest prices."
Price: $26.99

Wine Enthusiast: "Robust in flavor and structure, this full-bodied wine offers ample ripe black-cherry and black-plum notes, moderate to full tannins and a healthy dose of oak that shows up as cedar, wood smoke and tobacco." (12/2019)
Price: $19.99

Owned by local residents the Jackson family, the Jax wines are made by Kirk Venge, whose work with B Cellars and Bacio Divino has made him a star in the region. Because of the location of the vineyard, the Jax vines only see afternoon sun on most days, which allows for a slow-ripening process and fruit of supreme concentration. These wines have been undiscovered gems for insiders and those in-the-know, but with the impact of the past Parker scores, the cat is definitely out of the bag.
Price: $19.99

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a beautifully balanced, medium-bodied wine that goes beyond the basic black-fruit flavors and adds hints of dried earth and bay leaf on the nose and light wood smoke and black pepper flavors. Moderate tannins and persistent acidity complete the picture. *Editor's Choice*(JG)" (09/2018)
Price: $19.95

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Syrah Madder Lake is co-fermented with 5% Viognier, and that gives the wine an exotic, heady feel to the exuberant aromatics. It is a wine to drink in the next 4-5 years and is a wonderful bistro-styled Rhone Valley red with loads of spicy, peppery, peach and blackberry fruit notes in a stunningly proportioned style. It’s seamless and velvety-textured." (12/2007)
Price: $24.99
