Caves Messias Santola "Crab Wine" Vinho Verde

Produced from Loureiro and Pederña grapes grown in the granitic soils of the Vinho Verde region, the Santola (or as we here are calling it, "the crab wine") is a delicious, spritely and refreshing white. It doesn't get much more traditional, thirst-quenching or seasonally perfect then this wine. Delicious, low in alcohol, slightly fizzy and way too easy to drink!

2017 Quinta da Aveleda Loureiro-Alvarinho Vinho Verde

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Amazing: Fresh white refreshment for $10. Buy a case and you’ll have a savory, salty Atlantic white to drink all summer long. Right now, it’s delicate, with filigreed lemon-lime flavors offering fruit depth before signing off in a crisp, clean finish. Chill it as an early-evening aperitif, a brunch wine for bacalhão fritters or pike quenelles, or a picnic wine for ventresca tuna salad." (08/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Branco Quinta da Aveleda, the Estate white in the Bordeaux-style bottle, not to be confuse ...

2017 João Cabral Almeida "Camaleão" Minho Alvarinho

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Camaleão Alvarinho is very dry and comes in at 13% alcohol. Despite how dry it is, it seems fruity and rich, bursting with flavor. Not surprisingly, this adds some concentration to the blend (Alvarinho tends to produce deeper and richer wines). Showing beautiful purity of fruit and ripeness, this is pretty sexy. As it sits in the glass, it warms up and develops beautifully too, the underlying acidity and freshness coming closer to the foreground. Drink through 2030. 1977 Taylor Vintage Port

98 points Vinous: "The 1977 Taylor's Vintage Port is initially tight and conservative on the nose: strawberry, baked cherry, tobacco and wild hedgerow notes emerging but remaining tight-lipped. This needs a good decant! The palate is endowed with depth and concentration, very well balanced with an attractive crispness. Perhaps you could argue that it is a "linear" and more "correct" Taylor's compared to the 1970 and lacks some charm. But there is immense complexity here so it is more a case of a Port demanding a very long maturation in bottle. Tasted in ...

2017 Quinta da Roga Grande "Poente" Douro

Wine Spectator: "Mostly Tourigas Nacional and Franca, with 10 percent Sousão, this wine’s purple fruit is heady and sweet, grounded by chewy grape-skin tannins. It’s a rich wine with some hard edges, ready to meld with slow-braised pork." (02/2019)

1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

96 points Wine Spectator: "Some people may enjoy this wine's rather fat, rich and powerful fruit now, but I still find it too young for drinking. Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins. (JS, Web Only-1989)" 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Vintners Company’s 650th anniversary celebration at Vintners Hall, the Fonseca 1970 was the finest bottle I have encountered. Ramos Pinto Collector Port

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark and stern, leaning more to figs and dried plums than sweet red fruits, this very expressive and intense Reserva has unusual power for a Ruby Reserva and plenty of concentration for the category. One or two may have been its equal, but there was no wine in this report that showed better after being held for another two days. At that point, it still showed surprising power and coated the palate. As time went on, when a lot of the Reserves in this report fell off, this just got better. The gripping finish, even ...

2017 Herdade do Esporão "Esporão" Reserva Branco Alentejo

92 points Decanter: "Really great value for such a rich, classy white: the first wine made by Esporão back in 1985. This vintage is a blend of Arinto, Antão Vaz and Roupeiro from 18-year-old estate vines, partially aged on lees for six months in a mix of French and US oak and tank. Forward aromas of ripe apricot and orange blossom lead on to a weighty, generous palate, balanced by oak spice, refreshing acidity and a long, tangy marmalade finish. Very pretty plum and berry aromas, with hints of honey and toffee. Turns to custard. Full-bodied, sweet and fresh. Firm tannins, with elegance and balance. Will age for a long time, but ready. 1994 Taylor Vintage Port

100 points James Suckling: "This is, to date, the greatest Vintage Port ever from here. It overwhelmed me years ago when I tasted it from barrel, but only now is it crossing gradually into its drinking window. The intensity is still mind-boggling here, with sweet-and-sour notes as well as mounds of clay. There are violets lurking somewhere too. Taylor 10 Year Old Tawny Port

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. 1985 Graham's Vintage Port

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports. Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length. (RP)" (01/1989) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Dark color, with intense aromas of blackberry, licorice and hints of flowers. Full-bodied, lightly sweet, with superrefined tannins. Long and caressing. Sidonia de Sousa is a member of a group of Portuguese wineries that celebrate the baga grape and have come to be known as the "Baga Friends." 2016 Ramos Pinto "Duas Quintas" Douro

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Duas Quintas Tinto is mostly a 45/35 blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, with the last 20% comprised of other typical grapes. It was partly aged in well-used French oak (20%) and tonels (30%) for 13 months, the rest in stainless steel. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. When seen a couple of weeks after bottling in Portugal, this was quite a buy. It's now in the USA. Has it held serve? Mostly, yes. You sure can't go wrong at the price. 2017 Soalheiro "Allo" Vinho Verde

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 ALLO (from the AL of Alvarinho and the LO of Loureiro) marked a departure last year for Soalheiro, generally considered to be an Alvarinho specialist (not that they were wholly uninvolved with Loureiro). It is a 70/30 blend of Alvarinho and Loureiro coming in at a relatively modest 11% alcohol (more like a Loureiro than an Alvarinho). Opening with plenty of zip, zing and zest, not to mention a bit of mouth pucker, this is in a livelier style than the pure Alvarinhos. The Loureiro, despite its modest perc ...

A blend of red Baga and white Bical grapes, this is a fantastic, very low dosage (this is DRY!) rosé sparkler. Quinta do Regueiro makes great wines from their Vinho Verde area vineyards, located a short 10 minute drive from the town of Melgaço. As the name indicates, this is a blend of Alvarinho (a specialty grape of the sub-zone) and Trajadura.
