Cognac

Cognac

Cognac is named after the town of Cognac in France. It's a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town and among our favorite spirits. Three grape varieties are used in making Cognac: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. Charente is divided into different districts with different geological and physical characteristics. A worthy but less famous brother of Cognac, Armagnac is actually much older than Cognac. The first document mentioning it dates from the fifteenth century (1461). It is produced in the region of Gascony. Find Armagnac here.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This pours a bright amber color, with restrained but beautiful aromas of white flowers, orange, peach and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with bitter orange peel and stone fruit flavors, with lingering vanilla and oak. The alcohol feels relatively balanced, but it creeps up on you. This needs dilution, so use it in punches as intended and you'll be fine. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: 94 points, "Highly Recommended," from the 2012 Ultimate Spirit Challenge.

96 points Vinous: "Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (40% abv) (JW)" (0...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light, crisp and mixable if so desired, this brandy is scented with aromas of golden raisin and honey. On the palate, a flash of vanilla sweetness gives way to notes of oak, tea, allspice, leather and cocoa. (KN)" (12/2013) 91 points Vinous: "Pierre Ferrand doesn’t use VS, VSOP, or XO on its labels, but this flagship bottling from Grande Champagne has an average age of around 10 years and is about 10% Colombard along with the Ugni Blanc. Golden honey in color, with a floral nose of violet and rose and a bit of fresh-cut flow...

Ragnaud Sabourin K&L Exclusive Reserve Speciale #20 Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grand Champage, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc with a bit of Folle Blanche as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property this past spring. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of ...

94 points Vinous: "It’s rare to find a VSOP made solely from Borderies, and the limited-release Camus Family Reserve is a unique bottling. The nose is lively and complex, offering dried fruit, candied citrus and even notes of pineapple cake, but there’s also a fascinating hint of almost rhum-agricole-like grassiness and burnt sugarcane. Delicate on the palate, featuring dried apricot, orange peel and cinnamon, and notes of struck stone and flint throughout. Beautiful, intriguing VSOP and good value. (JW)" (09/2019) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This limi...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Like the first Master Blender’s selection, this is a Cognac that will appeal to whiskey-lovers. The mild aroma offers hints of vanilla and prune. The palate surprises with a smoky note, though it’s soon engulfed by huge waves of vanilla, hazelnut and fudge. The long, luscious finish is tinged with orange peel and baking spice. Single batch. Though it’s not labeled with an age category, the producer says this bottling is made with eaux-de-vie that are at least seven years old, which usually would set it in the XO category. (KN)...

Françoise Voyer VS Grand Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Back In Stock!
This wonderful VS is a benchmark for the category. Open, fresh and fragrant we're definitely on the more fruity and floral side of things, but a tiny hint of stewed apricots and oak spice poke through to give this lovely affordable Grand Champagne cognac the perfect balance. Voyer have owned 1er Cru vineyards in the most prestigious parts of Grand Champagne, Verriere and Ambleville, for 5 generations. While they're known for old ultra rare cognac, they're not ignoring the entry level like so many other producers in the region. They could sell this same E...

Dudognon "Reserve" Cognac (750ml)
Back In Stock!
91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) Wine Spectator: "Cognac Dudognon Réserve Grande Champagne reflects the very core of Grande Champagne's potential in its silky, layered glory. " (12/2014) K&L Notes: The Dudognon family has produced Cognac in the small town of Lignieres-Sonneville since 1776. This r...

From the Producer: In 1805 Leon Croizet, sommelier to Napoleon Bonaparte’s High Command, used his family’s famous vineyards situated in Grand Champagne to create a cognac of unsurpassed quality at a time when only 20 producers existed. The award-winning Croizet Cognac has made its mark through history being served on the Titanic in 1912 and having ties to European Royalty, Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower. Today, Croizet continues to pave its way globally, earning the title of best Cognac in the World in 2017. It remains one of three vintage cogn...

Jacques Esteve was one of the most exciting producers we visited in Cognac this January. His fruit is all estate and the brandies are distilled on site in a small room next to his garage. Pulling into the driveway, you wonder where the distillery is, but it's all carefully integrated into his country property. His barrels sit underneath his house and age gracefully amidst the cobwebs. Esteve's grapes and Cognac are in big demand right now with some of the large production houses and it's clear as to why. The Cognacs bring richness and weight while ret...

Dudognon Heritage 40 year Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "A fascinating 40-year-old spirit – Speyside by way of the tropics. Expressive aromas and flavors of both fleshy exotic fruit and salty sea air reminiscent of Scotch, plus a healthy dose of rancio. On the palate, it’s expansive and amiable, but followed by a long, serious, very dry finish full of astringent grilled walnut. Unique, but possibly a little confounding. (41% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: There is not a single cognac producer that exemplifies the importance of terroir more than the line up from Dudognon. Grand champagne, ...

Camus has completely revamped their lineup. This is not just a packaging change, but an actual change in the Cognac itself. In addition to now distilling everything on the lees, they've incorporated a unique technique they've developed over the last two decades in which they take what would be the heads cuts, split it into 20 tiny batches, and then evaluate and add back in the 10 most intensely aromatic portions before barreling. The result is a stunninglly intense aromatic Cognac that is leaps and bounds more complex and enjoyable. The VSOP is elegant a...

Camus owns the majority of the vineyards in the Borderies appellation. With the very best vineyards at their fingrtips, they are undisputedly the premier producer of Borderies Cognac. The XO is extraordinary. It's intensely aromatic with a complex bouquet of floral, fruity, and wood spice notes. It possesses a powerful brioche and tropical note to go with the rich and creamy texture from the long aged spirit. Absolutely one of the best values on the shelf.

93 points Vinous: "This experimental blend of seven- to 20-year-old Grande Champagne is finished for 12 to 18 months in Banyuls casks. Light copper in color, it’s bright and fruity, with flavors and aromas of fresh citrus and stone fruit, but there’s significant rancio throughout. Banyuls is all about rancio, so that it makes sense, but the palate is very unique, almost the opposite of what’s expected: the spice and rancio come up front, followed by a finish of raisins and dates. A fascinating and tasty experiment. (42.3% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes...

The Beau family is one of the oldest artisanal Cognac distillers in the Segonzac, the heart of the Grande Champagne region. Samuel Beau started distilling in 1895, bottling and selling his brandies under his own name, which at that time was unusual. To this day, the Beau family still takes meticulous care of their 200 plus acres of Grande Champagne fruit, most of which is Ugni Blanc with a tiny fraction of Colombard. The Hor d' Age is an average of 30 years old. It was rated one of the 130 best spirits in the world from Paul Pacult's Spirits Journal, whi...

The house of A. Edmond Audry was founded in 1878 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner. In the early 1950s, the Audry Company stopped selling cognac. However, some very old stocks were held back in reserve in the hopes that Audry would one day rise again to the fore. That day came in 1978 when Bernard Boisson, a lawyer by training, decided to resurrect the family tradition that had remained dormant for four decades. The family stopped distilling in 1974, so Audry is made from blends of the original reserve and a few lots bought from a small...

For over 15 generations Pierre Gourry and his family have been dedicated to the production of traditional Cognac made entirely by manual means. The small family estate in Segonzac (one of the epicenters of Cognac production) was officially founded in 1619 and still stands today as the oldest estate in the region. This special Overproof three year old was created with cocktails in mind but with zero additives, caramel, or boise, etc. It's incredible to see how pure and well made this spirit is on its own. 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Tesseron family, who made their fortune in Cognac (but are probably best known by wine lovers as the proprietor of Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet) released tiny quantities of single vintage Cognacs. Although French law does not permit a vintage date to be used, this is all from 1929, and is very limited in availability. I'm not an expert on Cognac, but anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink. (Hedonist's Gazette...

It is a blend of Cognacs from the Grande and Petite Champagne districts only. Fresh fruitiness on both the nose and the palate, which is tempered by a welcome dose of rancio. The taste is smooth and supple, with floral notes, hints of honey, leather and a finish of fresh vanilla bean.

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The aroma features fig, prune, pastry dough, honey and maple scents. On palate, Louis XIII offers long and intensely woody flavors; additional layers of flavor, including figs, dates, prunes, dried apricot and vanilla, are featured at midpalate. Finishes elegantly, warm, smooth and more oaky than fruity succulent. Only minor rancio." (10/2007) K&L Notes: Blended from 1,200 eaux-de-vie exclusively from the Grande Champagne region, and aged up to 100 years in century-old tierçon barrels, LOUIS XIII is one of the rarest spir...

96 points Vinous: "Slightly older than Delamain Pale & Dry, at 30 to 35 years old, this copper-colored XO is even more complex. There’s still orchard fruit, but also beautiful aromas of fresh wildflowers and wet earth. On the palate, it’s richer, rounder and expansive, offering more intense saline and spice notes, but there’s still the delicious note of quince and membrillo at the core, and a finish that goes on forever. Francois Voyer is renowned for producing high quality ultra aged cognac from the most prestigous vineyards in Grand Champagne.
