2017 Domaine de Verquière Côtes-du-Rhône

The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for many generations and is now managed by brothers Romain and Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was recently certified organic. The Côtes-du-Rhône is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on chalky clay soils with loads of large pebbles in the vineyards. Verquière recently returned to us after a long hiatus and we are pleased to have them back.

2016 Xavier Vignon "Cuvée Vieilles Vignes" Côtes du Rhône

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and the rest Cinsault and Syrah, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Cuvée Vieilles Vignes offers a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, blueberries, lavender, cured meats, and graphite. It's deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and has a great finish. The Mourvèdre keeps this tight and fresh, and I suspect it will age beautifully. It's another deeply colored effort from this estate that has classic notes of bouquet garni, sweet red and black fruits, new saddle leather, and assorted spicy nuances. 2015 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As usual, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone features a majority of Syrah, largely sourced from the western side of the Rhône. Spicy, peppery, hickory aromas lead off, adding berries up front and then moving into darker fruit and more savory notes of black olive by the finish. This medium to full-bodied wine finishes long and silky, avoiding any of the vintage's hard tannins, while still boasting the concentration to drink well through at least 2023. The 2017 Terrasses is even better than the 2016 and ranks with the finest vintages I’ve tasted, matching the stunning 2010. Philippe Gimel is the proprietor of St. Jean du Barroux, one of the best under-the-radar producers we’ve found this year. Philippe didn’t walk into the business with any grand schemes or idealism about making wine. He has used the knowledge he gained working at Château de Beaucastel, Domaine de la Janasse, and many others to plant, farm, and eventually make wine from three beautiful plots below Mont Ventoux. Philippe is a man of patience and precision, and farms organically. In fact, the vineyards are planted with a biodynamic philosophy, and he encourag ...

2015 Clos du Mont-Olivet "Cuvée du Papet" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Previously $60)

96 points James Suckling: "This is 70% Grenache with the remainder equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre. Aromas of ripe raspberry, red plum and cherry, with herbs, pepper and a whole bunch of sappiness, too. The palate has radiant, regal tannins in fine proportion. Super fresh. Best from 2020. " (01/2018) 95 points Decanter: "70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, some more than 100 years old. Vibrant and expressive raspberry and violet, a beautiful expression of Grenache. Full-bodied with fine tannins, pinpoint acidity. Subtle and expertly crafted. Drinki ...

2015 Chateau de Vaudieu "Amiral G" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Previously $90)

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "My favorite in the lineup is the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Amiral G., and like all the cuvées here, it has a voluptuous, sexy, yet elegant style. Black raspberries, framboise, spice-box, and floral notes all give way to a full-bodied, powerful, yet incredibly elegant Châteauneuf that has a weightless texture and a blockbuster finish. It's already drinking nicely, yet should cruise for a decade. This is another great lineup from Chateau de Vaudieu, who have risen to the top of the heap recently. They make a perfumed, elegant style o ...

2018 Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Rosé

Jeb Dunnuck writes: "Another terrific estate from the Costières de Nîmes appellation, Chateau l’Ermitage has a history going back to the 1800s. Today, the estate covers 80 hectares and is run by third generation winemaker Michel Castillon, with help from his son, Jérôme."

2016 Xavier Vignon "Cuvée Anonyme" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Anonyme is the flagship and is mostly Grenache that was sourced from numerous terroirs throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape and brought up in a mix of tank and barrels (some new). It offers a rocking bouquet of black raspberries, blueberries, lavender, Asian spices, and graphite. Like all of Xavier's 2016s, it has purity, freshness, and richness, yet still packs ample richness and depth. Give this full-bodied, elegant red another few years, and it will keep for a decade. 95+" (08/2018) 95 points Robe ...

2016 Chante Cigale Côtes du Rhône Vieilles Vignes

The fruit for Chante Cigale's old-vine Côtes du Rhône comes from hand-harvested, 50-year-old vines in the Plan de Dieu, one of the finest lieux-dits in the CdR AOC. Composed of 70% Grenache, 20% Carignan, and 10% Syrah, the wine shows noble but restrained red fruit character along with notes of game and subtle spice. This is as serious as Côtes du Rhône AOC wine gets with the potential for aging up to 10 years in proper storage. It is ideal to pair with hearty country cuisine like Ratatouille, and it stands as one of the finest values in the store.

2015 Domaine Michel & Stephane Ogier "La Combe de Malleval" Condrieu (Previously $60)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Stephane commented that he did everything he could to maintain freshness in his 2015 whites, and he’s done a fabulous job with both Condrieu releases. The 2015 Condrieu La Combe de Malleval comes from two separate parcels and offers a textbook array of apricot, flower oil, crushed rocks and sappy flowers, with building depth and richness on the palate. It’s a gorgeous Condrieu that will be even better this time next year and drink well for 4-5 years at a minimum. " (12/2016) 93 points Vinous: "Pale yellow-gold. ...

2018 Domaine de l'Ermitage "Victor" Costières de Nîmes Blanc

Costières de Nîmes is at the southernmost part of the Rhône Valley, on the opposite bank of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of our best new finds is Château de l'Ermitage, which produces three terrific values with imminent drinkability. The estate's history traces back to the 12th century when the winery produced wine for the pilgrims of St-Jacques de Compostelle who were traveling the Santiago de Compostela. The property is now owned by the Castillon family, and today Michel and his son Jerome manage the vineyards and winemaking. The "Victor" is named for the ...
