2003 D.R. Stephens "Premiere Napa Valley" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Premiere Napa Valley lots are incredibly limited, one-off bottlings from some of the region’s top producers. Only five cases of this bottling were produced. Winery Notes: “Every year winemaker Celia Masyczek tastes and sniffs her way through the cellar seeking those lots of D.R. Stephens Cabernet Sauvignon that represent the best of the vintage. She sets one such barrel aside for Premiere Napa Valley. This year's selection promises to be special indeed with its dark red color and rich full flavors. The wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and has not been fin ...

2003 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir

Aromas of mountain strawberries and cherry are present, but this wine is far more complex than primary fruit. Over days, an opened bottle reveals intriguing layers. There is the venerable smell of the interior of an antique armoire, perhaps leather and tobacco too. At a certain point the wine shows an iron and mineral coldness that then passes to saffron and earthy depth. The fruit is persistent, but not dominant, as it changes from fresh ripe red fruits to hibiscus flower and tea flavors. The texture, although more supple than the previous vintage, is f ...

2003 Paul Hobbs "Beckstoffer Dr. Crane" St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From a St. Helena vineyard, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Crane Vineyard (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) boasts tremendous fruit and ripeness along with hints of graphite, espresso roast, blackberries, creme de cassis, and spice. (RP)" (12/2005) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep red. Cassis, chocolate, licorice and a floral topnote on the nose; shows an almost roasted ripeness. Highly concentrated, silky and supersweet, with the chocolate and loam flavors that characterize cabernet from t ...

2003 Sullivan Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Enthusiast: "Seems like it was picked earlier than most ’03s, given the dry tannins and peppery, minty flavors. Still, it has a beautiful structure, classic and refined, with cherry and cocoa flavors and upscale oak. " (12/2006) K&L Notes: Founded by Jim and Joanna Sullivan in 1978, the Sullivan estate is in the heart of Rutherford. Sullivan favors elegance and balance over maximum ripeness, and this 2003 Cabernet, coming in at just 13.5% ABV, is an excellent example of their approach.

2003 Neal Family "Howell Mountain Estate" Cabernet Sauvignon

From the winery: "November 8, 2006 - Located 1,800 feet above sea level, this mountain property is the home for our family and the winery. The vineyard has been farmed organically since 1998, is certified by CCOF, and is currently enrolled in the Fish Friendly Farming environmental certification program. The wine's fragrance expresses cherry fruit, dark chocolate, sandalwood spice and creamy oak. In the mouth there are multiple layers of black fruit, raspberries and spice. 2003 Peter Michael "Les Pavots" Knights Valley Bordeaux Blend

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This wine has filled out very nicely. Nearly 3,000 cases were produced of this flowery, tar, camphor, incense, blackberry, black currant, espresso and chocolate-scented beauty. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 22% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot, this full-bodied, opulent 2003 is just entering its plateau of full maturity. It is better at age ten than it was early in life from cask and post-bottling. (RP)" (06/2013) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Full med ...

2003 Kenwood "Artist Series" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

Connoisseurs Guide: "Even accepting that Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape that delivers its fair share of tannin, this wine goes a little bit overboard in its late parts, and the ripe, rich aromas and reasonably fruity flavors that come before are more than a little bit occluded at the back. Still, there is fruit at its heart, and, for those willing to wait, the wine may well reward their patience." (12/2007) Wine Enthusiast: "The ’03 is elegant and sleek, with blackberry and cassis flavors that finish thoroughly dry. But even at 4-plus years, the tannins ...

2003 Turley "Moore Earthquake" Napa Valley Zinfandel

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Zinfandel Moore Earthquake Vineyard is a prodigious effort. The good news is that there are 500 cases of this offering, which tips the scales at 16.3% alcohol. A big, sweet bouquet of red and black currants, raspberries, licorice, and hints of cassis and pepper is followed by a full-bodied, rich, voluptuously-textured Zin with crisp, zesty acidity, huge body, and terrific definition as well as vibrancy. This large-scaled wine should drink well for up to a decade. (RP)" (02/2005)

2003 Paul Hobbs "Hyde Vineyard" Carneros Cabernet Sauvignon

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From the cool Carneros region, Hobbs fashioned a sensational 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Hyde Vineyard. Its inky/purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of graphite interwoven with soil, black currant, and pepper scents. With full body, impressive delineation, and a long, concentrated, deep finish, this 2003 Cabernet will be at its finest between 2007-2020. 2003 Dyer Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery notes: "At Dyer Straits Wine Co., we have a singular focus. We planted Dyer vineyard in 1993 on a site where volcanic gravel mingles with large volcanic boulders that slid from the ridge above thousands of years ago. The 2.3 acres of vines are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, 78% and two Bordeaux blending varieties; Cabernet Franc, 16% and Petit Verdot, 6% - a mix which we have refined over the years. Our farming methods are sustainable, we use only organic sprays to prevent mildew, and weed whackers instead of herbicide- we live here after all."

2003 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Chardonnay

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "For decades Hanzell has been making one of California’s most (and only) ageworthy Chards. The ’03 is one for the cellar, but it comes at the price of being hard in youth. Starts out flinty and tannic, although as it airs, new oak and pineapple emerge. This seems like a very good Hanzell. Best 2009–2015. " (11/2006) Wine Spectator: "Rich and intense, full-bodied and complex, with cedary oak, hazelnut and lead pencil flavors from oak, overshadowing a core of ripe apple, pear and melon, with a lingering spicy aftertaste. 2003 Nickel & Nickel "Suscol Ranch" Napa Valley Merlot

Wine & Spirits: "Cool scents of raspberry begin to gain on the oak tones as this fills out with air. Past the smoky wood spice, a mineral aspect adds to the firmness of the wine." (08/2006) K&L Notes: Similar to the 2002, this wine is quite impressive, offering layers of interest. Ripe flavors of dark plum and wild berry are enhanced by underlying layers of herb, cedar and sweet oak. The unique character of this vineyard includes a suppleness on the palate that few Merlots can offer. Its distinctiveness lies in the lush, velvety tannins that expand upo ...

2003 Hollywood & Vine "2480" Napa ValleyCabernet Sauvignon

This wine accentuates its bold multi-faceted origins. Ripe wild plums dominate the aromas, while toasty spice and vanilla tones compliment the mouth filling purple fruit character. Texturally, the wine is broad and rich on the palate as plum, blackberry, clove and earthy notes dance together in a cohesive, complex expression of the variety. Harvested from three very unique growing regions, all within Napa Valley. A tightly-knit personality and a tannic structure suggest patience will be required. 2003 Paradigm Napa Merlot

90 points and one star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "A measured Merlot leading with scents of red cherries and sweet plums buttressed by creamy, slightly caramelly oak, this bottling is fairly full in weight and well-balanced throughout. Its flavors again favor both ripe cherries and plums and look to a streak of fine-grained tannins for support. Polish and precision make this one a wine to remember." Pahlmeyer-s wines, first made by Helen Turley, continue to go from strength to strength. It boasts a nearly impenetrable looking blue/purple color, not quite the weight and majesty of the perfect 2002, but gorgeous purity and creme de cassis, floral and spice box notes. 2003 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In contrast, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is an equal part blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit. There is no doubting the Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine! Classic notes of cedarwood, underbrush, licorice, black currants and tobacco leaf are textbook definitions of this varietal. The color is even denser than the Reserve Claret's, and the bouquet offers additional notes of Chinese black tea. 2003 Seavey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

It spent 19 months in 50% new French oak prior to bottling. A big, robust, exuberant, powerful Conn Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from dry-farmed hillside vineyards and extremely low yields, it achieved a lofty 15.4% natural alcohol (which is not the least bit noticeable in the wine’s flavor profile). 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Current vintages of the luxury cuvee, the Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection, are bottled much earlier than in the past and they remain one of Napa's most classic Cabernets. The 2003's opaque purple color suggests a wine much younger than ten years of age. Copious amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, spice box and a whiff of new saddle leather result in a classic, authoritative, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with no hard edges. 2003 Lamborn Family Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 22 months in French oak of which 35% was new. It finished at 14.8% natural alcohol, so it is a big red packaged in a heavy, shoulder-wrenching, but attractive bottle. Plum, black currant and mossy, earthy notes are present in this brooding, somewhat primordial style of Cabernet Sauvignon. There is no coarseness or rusticity, but the wine seems backward for a 2003 with high acids and a spicy finish. I enjoyed all the component parts, but they are still youthful, reminding me of a 2- to ...

The core blackberry and blueberry flavors are shaded by hints of beef, sage, herb and tobacco. It all comes together nicely on the finish, though it clearly needs cellaring to soften the rough edges.
