90 points Wine Spectator: "Elegant, showing a gentle texture, with intense acidity giving energy to the flavors of yellow apple, lime and honeysuckle. Salty mineral elements emerge midpalate, leaving a savory aftertaste. *Smart Buy* (AZ)" (10/2019) K&L Notes: #65 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2019 This project is headed by Vincent Carême of Loire Valley fame. Inspired by the South African landscape (and perhaps also by his wife, Tania, who hails from the Cape region), he has decided to create this southern expression of Chenin Blanc.

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Drought conditions followed by a cool harvest season produced a stunning version of Adi Badenhorst’s entry-level Chenin. He took an unusual approach in 2018, harvesting the fruit over the course of 12 days and adding each day’s fruit to the already-fermenting musts. All of it was whole-bunch pressed, and one-quarter was fermented in old casks, the rest in tanks. Left on its lees for seven months with occasional stirring, the final wine is as deep and rich in flavor as its yellow hue predicts: It moves from waxy apple flavors to...

The "Little j" blends of Joostenberg were made to be served with the food at the restaurant of this estate, which is the oldest in South Africa. The wine is almost wholly Chenin Blanc with a dollop of Viognier. According to the winery: "A medium-bodied, fresh and complex white wine. Bold guava and melon aromatics and some intriguing floral notes (from the touch of Viognier). The refreshing acidity is balanced by a small amount of residual sugar."

Neal Martin writes: "Boekenhoutskloof is another of the few wineries of this scale that has undergone a lot of investment in recent years. I took a brief look at their barrel cellar, accessed through a long tunnel with winemaker Gottfied Mokke. “The first bottling that was done in the new cellar was the 2015,” he told me as I surveyed row upon row of barrels and several tiers high. “They are based on the OXO(2) revolving system so they don’t have to be moved to be racked. This has enabled us to shorten the élevage. The wines used to spend longer time in ...

Neal Martin writes: "Adi Badenhorst is the charismatic winemaker who alongside Eben Sadie has put Swartland on the map. Outspoken, opinionated and talented, his charisma rubs off upon the wines he creates. Moreover, they are available at extremely affordable prices and serve as a perfect introduction to the delights of Adi’s and Swartland’s wines."

The Little J Red is a bistro red blend consisting of 86% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, and 4% Grenache. This is an unprentious, generous wine made from a selection of vineyards in mainly the AgterPaarl area (part of the Paarl appelation). The predominant soils are Malmesbury Shale. These soils have a surprisingly good moisture retention capability which allows for dry-land farming in this relatively warm and dry area. The vineyards are a combination of traditional bush-vines and trellised blocks.

Fynbos is an abundant floral system unique to the South African landscape that includes over 9,000 species of plant within its natural habitat. It is from this singular botanical phenomenon that Inverroche gently and sustainably procures the botanical foundation for their gins. Not only is this a well-crafted classic gin with vibrant juniper notes, citrus edges, and aromatic complexity - it is all that and a singular distilled expression of the complex and vibrant ecosystem of Fynbos! There's just nothing else like it. Inverroche Distillery was founded ...

As its playful name suggests, this spicy red is a Syrah-dominated blend, featuring classic Rhône varietals. David Finlayson, owner and winemaker at Edgebaston, created this red with the joy of the everyday in mind. It’s a fruit-forward style, bursting with luscious black cherry and cassis flavors, while retaining a spicy edge, definitive structure, and a clean finish. David employs only stainless-steel tanks rather than oak barrels in making this wine, to highlight the fruit character. His recommended pairing for this charming little wine is pizza.

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 John X Merriman is the spiciest vintage to date according to Murray Barlow, due to the cooler growing season that did not go past 30 degrees Celsius during the season. Matured in 35% new oak for 20 months, that spice-box element does percolate through the red berry fruit on the nose, touches of bay leaf and melted tar emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin on the entry, a fine seam of acidity, grippy and quite assertive at first, but calmer towards the finish with that...

94 points Decanter: "Silky textured, with lovely inviting notes of grapefruits, wild flowers and sweet spices. Displays exceptional finesse and typicity. " (10/2019) Wine Spectator: "Lively, with green almond, honeysuckle and melon notes zipping through. (JM, Web-2019)" K&L Notes: Andrea Mullineux’s 2018 Kloof Street is a stunning example of exceptional South African Chenin, produced by one of South Africa’s best winemakers. Named Wine Enthusiast’s “Winemaker of the Year” in 2017, this American expat living in Swartland has been crafting stunning win...

92 points Wine Spectator: "This shows slight oxidative notes, with hints of paraffin and marzipan that quickly dissipate, while spice and floral details frame the core of yellow apple and melon flavors. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Meerlust Red is dark fruited with hints of oak and dusty mineral character. Wine & Spirits: "From the estate formerly known as Buitenverwachtig, this is fresh and tangy with notes of lime and red grapefruit. A little spice and some vegetal notes give it complexity, and point it toward a Sichuan green-bean stir-fry." (08/2019) Wine Spectator: "Refreshing, with notes of grapefruit and bitter lemon oil. Expressive and mouthwatering. Drink now through 2023. (AZ)" (10/2019)

Wine Enthusiast: "There's a lush red cherry, plum and strawberry character right upfront on the nose of this sunset-colored rosé. There's almost a meaty accent as well, lending some interesting richness to the fruit profile. The texture is smooth and rounded, with medium weight and just enough acidity and texture to counter. (LB)" (05/2019) Wine Spectator: "Pretty strawberry and white cherry fruit glides through, with a flash of savory on the plump finish. (JM, Web Only-2018)"

90 points Wine & Spirits: "Pinotage, South African’s hybrid of Cinsault and Pinot Noir, has been Beaumont’s focus since the 1970s. Most of this wine comes from 45-year-old vines, with 20% from newer plantings. The wine has a smoky black-cherry scent, with pretty violet hints and peppery spice. Its tannins are strong, dusty and dry, allowing some flavor development to show in the finish." (02/2020) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The nose of the 2016 Pinotage is mainly red-fruited, with a precise core that wafts with white and red spiced tea, fresh blac...

94 points Vinous: "Copper-orange color. Knockout, endlessly complex perfume of orange blossom, cinnamon Red Hots, clove, ginger and mint. A silky, umami-like texture is utterly seamless and smooth. Hints of griotte cherry, orange zest, fynbos and tree bark are lifted by a strong spicy character. Wonderfully complex, moderately sweet and long, with a finishing note of bitter orange giving the finish a drier quality and great refreshment value. I bet you can't drink just one glass. It has a vibrant raspberry acidity and a long finish. Great value. (JB)" (10/2017) Wine Spectator: "Peach, white cherry and bergamot notes mingle here, backed by a hint of watermelon rind on the lightly coarse finish. Producer's Notes: "This medium bodied Chardonnay has a light straw yellow color with tints of green. Fresh citrus notes are prominent on the nose followed by whiffs of tropical fruit before revealing a hint of oak spice. This is a fruit driven wine with a lovely balance between acidity and fruit. The wood adds to its fullness without dominating it. A beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity is complemented by a long lingering finish. Enjoy now or let it mature for 2 to 4 years."

94 points Wine Spectator: "A tightly wound but well-crafted example, this needs a little bit of air at the moment, but will be better after a few years of cellaring. Elegant, featuring notes of damson plum, black tea and lavender, with juicy acidity and firm, integrated tannins providing support. Shows balance, intensity and depth. (JM)" (05/2019) 93 points Vinous: "The 2016 Columella was matured for 12 months in 10% new oak and then 12 months in old foudres. It has a well defined bouquet, quite neutral in style but blossoming with aeration to reveal hints of lanolin and melted candle wax. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, touches of curry leaf and spice and orange peel. A long tail on the finish of white pepper and sage completes this wonderful Palladius. From the winery: "Vrede Pinot Noir hails from a steep, northeast-facing slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley with low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil. This wine displays richness and generosity with an opulent floral and dark berry perfume. The clay soil lends structure and impressive base notes to the wine. ? Not flashy or overly fruity, the wine shows depth, purity and structure – characteristic of the site’s low-vigour, stony, clay-rich shale soil."

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Bon Vallon Chardonnay offers vibrant tropical fruit, guava and underripe pineapple along with aromas of peaches and pears on the nose. The wine is medium-bodied and slightly leesy on the palate, without the presence of oak, ending with a good, clean and correct finish that is moderate to long. This was made in stainless steel tanks to keep the freshness and vibrancy of the Chardonnay. (AM)" (10/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "There's a faint straw and toasted challah character in the background of th...

This is complex and intellectual, yet utterly compelling, with beautifully detailed brambly red berry fruit, fennel, thyme and fynbos scents that blossom with aeration. The very detailed palate displays filigreed tannins, incredible focus and arresting purity through to the lightly spiced finish. This is one of the best from Sadie this vintage. " (11/2019) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Elegant, with white peach, heather and lemon verbena flavors at the core, framed by savory he...

92 points Wine Spectator: "This flirts with intensity and grace, featuring electric acidity that fuels notes of pickled ginger, lemon and white peach before hints of cream, sea salt and cilantro flow in. Taut, but precise and complex, this will be gorgeous once the acidity fully integrates. (AZ)" (12/2019)

94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Skurfberg, Sadie’s Chenin Blanc from Olifantsrivier, has a very neutral, pressed flower bouquet that is much more backward than the other crus. The well-balanced palate presents veins of marmalade and orange peel, wonderful tension and superb precision on the finish. Though backward at the moment, this will certainly repay cellaring. " (11/2019)

92 points Vinous: "The 2015 Rubicon had been a source of contention prior to my visit, hailed by some respected commentators as one of the Cape’s greats and then almost pilloried in a contemporaneous blind tasting. It is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, each fermented separately before blending. It was matured for 18 months in 66% new oak and the remainder second-fill. So what do I make of the wine? It is clear in color with quite a deep core. The bouquet is refined and focused, offering attractive mi...

92 points James Suckling: "A blue-fruited and deliciously fresh syrah that shows blueberries, black peppers and Chinese spices. Medium-bodied, linear and refined with polished tannins and a succulent, violet-flavored finish. Screw cap. Drink or hold." (06/2018) 92 points Vinous: "The 2016 Syrah is 100% whole-bunch fruit, and I think this gives it the edge over the 2015. It has a very fresh, focused nose with more edginess than the previous vintage, offering touches of peppermint and dried herbs. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin - quite...

From the importer: "The hefty Cinsault component will ensure excellent aging and enough suppleness for drinking young. Perfumed, peppery, spicy, smokey aromas, with ripe red fruit notes. The palate is supple, smooth on the entry but with enough grip and freshness to finish dry and refreshing."
Price: $14.99

95 points Wine Spectator: "Impressively graceful, moving confidently across the palate. The firm but well-integrated acidity links notes of blanched almond, white raspberry, clementine, elderflower and cardamom. Nearly seamless, but this should develop further and show even more in a few years. (AZ)" (12/2019)

91 points Vinous: "The 2017 Old Vines White is a blend of 65% Chenin Blanc, 10% Viognier, 10% Clairette Blanche, 13% Grenache Blanc and 2% Sémillon Gris. This has a lighter bouquet than the previous vintage, featuring touches of honeysuckle and peach skin with white flowers tucked just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and quite tensile, showing a subtle white pepper and marmalade note toward the precise finish. Very fine, although I have a soft spot for the hedonism shown by the 2016. (NM)" (08/2018)

Hamilton Russell Vineyards have been making wines in the cool-climate Walker Bay region of South Africa since the early 1980s, and in that time has carved out a reputation for producing wines that straddle the old and new worlds. Only two varieties are grown: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Among the largely mountainous South African wine regions, Walker Bay is something of an anomaly. It is located close to the water and has a climate more like Santa Barbara than Cape Town, and in a land better known for Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc than Chardonnay, this ...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Brut, which carries six grams per liter of residual sugar and was disgorged December 2016, is an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It has a fresh lime and sea spray bouquet, well defined with a light honeysuckle aroma. The palate is well balanced with citrus peel on the entry. It might not be as persistent as other South African MCCs, but it is bounding with freshness and delivers a tangy orange-pith finish. How how many champagnes can you get change from with a twenty dollar bill? (NM)" (04/2017) Vinous: ...
