93 points Connoisseurs Guide: "As intense as it is so very varietally precise, this is an exceptional Syrah of considerable scope and authority whose deeply fruited, distinctly peppery aromas quickly draw one in and, if anything, are surpassed in richness and range by the wine’s even deeper, altogether complete flavors. Unabashedly ripe and very full-bodied without intimating heaviness and still on the youthfully sinewy side on the palate, this is one that in no uncertain terms begs for cellar time, and it is guaranteed to reward six to ten years of age ...

This Syrah is grown in a cool climate, and has open, perfumed aromatics with black berry fruit, cassis, and sage on the nose. On the palate it transitions to medium body with fresh acidity, mild tannin and a long follow through. Loads of concentrated blueberry fruit complement the slightly earthy notes that come into play on the close. We highly recommend this with roasted lamb dishes, and smoked game. Winemaker's notes: "Lots of spice and all things nice! Dark chocolate and coffee notes. Perhaps with a hint of bay leaf and clove. These wines have the t...

96 points Wine Spectator: "Bright and fresh, with lively red currant, bitter cherry and damson plum fruit streaking through, with lovely floral, chalk and savory details throughout. Long, mouthwatering minerality on the finish adds even more energy. Best from 2022 through 2040. 360 cases made, 45 cases imported. (JM)" (11/2019) 95 points Vinous: "Bright violet. Vibrant, intensely perfumed black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, potpourri and smoky minerals. Seamless and precise on the palate, showing intense minera...

2015 Georges Vernay "Maison Rouge" Côte-Rôtie (Elsewhere $150) (Elsewhere $150)
New!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Côte Rôtie Maison Rouge comes from the southern part of Côte Rôtie and is mostly destemmed (there’s 25% stems) and is brought up in 25% new French oak. It’s unquestionably the finest red I’ve tasted from the domaine, boasting awesome notes of black raspberries, blackberries, ground herbs, exotic flowers, and spice. As always, it’s not a powerhouse and offers incredible elegance and finesse in its texture, fine tannins, and great finish. Hide bottles for 2-4 years and it will drink brilliantly over the following 10-15." (1...

2017 Georges Vernay "Blonde du Seigneur" Côte-Rôtie (1.5L)
New!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Blended with 5% Viognier and from three lieu-dits, all from the south, the 2017 Côte Rôtie Blonde Du Seigneur still has quite a punch with its beautiful black raspberries, smoked earth, spice, and flower-driven aromas and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant, it's slightly tight and closed and will be better in 2-3 years of bottle age. 91+ " (12/2019) K&L Notes: One of the most iconic estates in the Northern Rhone, Christine Vernay took over the property some twenty years ago from her father (w...

94 points Vinous: "Dark purple. Bright and energetic on the nose, displaying spice- and mineral-tinged dark berry, cherry and floral scents that pick up smoke and cracked pepper nuances as the wine opens up. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering sweet black raspberry, cherry liqueur and violet pastille flavors and a hint of salty olive. Fine-grained tannins add grip to an impressively long, lively finish that echoes the floral and cherry notes. (JR)" (09/2019) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Enticing blackberry and raspberry fruit flavors are melded toget...

Seamless and precise on the palate, showing intense mineral lift and thrust to the appealingly sweet blueberry, violet pastille, salty olive and spicecake flavors, which deepen on the back half. The mineral note gains strength with air and carries emphatically through a vibrant, focused finish that features discreet tannins and lingering florality. (JR)" (09/2019) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a great entry-level look at cool climate Syrah. Aromas of seaweed, roasted rosemary and raw lamb flesh are intriguing. The palate is also very gamy, spiced by peppercorns, iodine and dried kelp, finishing on a rosemary lift. *Editors' Choice* (MK)" (09/2019) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Syrah Santa Barbara County gives pretty kirsch, red currant jelly and black raspberry notes with Chinese five spice, Sichuan pepper and forest floor in the undercurrent. Medium-bodie...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Aged 36 months in new oak, the colossal 2015 Hermitage Ex Voto is up with the finest vintages of this cuvée to date and is certainly in the same ballpark as the 2009 and 2010. This deep, powerful, muscular Hermitage boasts a saturated purple color to go with its huge nose of crème de cassis, freshly crushed rocks, incense, charcoal, and spring flowers. Full-bodied, with good acidity and huge richness and density, it requires 5-7 years of cellaring and should drink well for 40+ years. (JD)" (12/2018) 96 points Robert Parker's Win...

Delas Frères is one of the largest producers in the northern Rhône but also one of the most admired. With a track record dating back to 1865, they are primarily a négociant operation. But their vineyard contracts (and some domaine holdings) give them access to a stunningly broad array of fruit. The Marquis de la Tourette is a blend of their most coveted Hermitage vineyard sites.

Bedrock notes: "Though 2013 was our last year making the Weill "Exposition" wines, we still made a single wine in 2014 using the same methods. Using a large percentage of co-fermented Viognier and a moderate fraction of whole-cluster, we vinified the wine using native yeasts. It then spent three years in 100% new oak barrels of various sizes without racking. Though only an individual wine, this was created in the same mold as the Weill wines of 2011-2013. Thus, it is an outlier stylistically for us, albeit one that many enjoy, particularly the fans of...

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Cote Rotie La Belle Helene is perfection. In this vintage, Ogier cut back the barrel aging time from 32 months in largely new oak casks to 18 months. Ogier’s remarkable flexibility depending on vintage conditions and the quality of the fruit is admirable. He thinks this may be the greatest bottle of wine he has ever made, and it’s hard to disagree. An inky/purple color is followed by notes of pen ink, graphite, forest floor, licorice and abundant black and blue fruits. There is little evidence of new oa...

97 points James Suckling: "The blackberries and cloves are intense on the nose with licorice and hints of eucalyptus, too. Full body, extremely fine tannins and citrus rind undertones. Tight and composed. I love the length. Drink now." (08/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Syrah Suisassi is a very ripe and opulent expression. If Syrah loves the summer heat, it has soaked it all up here. It is almost too much of a good thing, and the subtle nuances are buried deep within the considerable girth and width of the mouthfeel. Black fru...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The first vintage for this cuvée and from relatively younger vines planted in 2010, the 2015 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde is another gorgeous wine from this young superstar winemaker. Offering beautiful notes of black raspberries, black currants, spring flowers, violets, and incense, with more minerality and deep Syrah meatiness with air, this full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, finesse-driven Côte Rôtie has sweet tannin and a layered, seamless texture that just keeps on giving. Due to its purity of fruit and incredible tannin qualit...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "*No tasting note given*" (10/2002) 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby-red. Sappy, superripe aromas of cherry liqueur and sweet oak. Dense, sweet and deep, with cherry and licorice flavors. Finishes with big, sweet, chewy tannins, excellent length and a strikingly aromatic character. Here's a '99 that's better in the bottle than it was from barrel a year ago. (ST)" (01/2002) Wine Spectator: "Appealingly rich, but also quite tannic. This medium-bodied Syrah has sweet fruit along with mineral ch...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another perfect wine, the 2015 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from the Bessards lieu-dit on Hermitage, which is pure granite soils. I've said it before, but will say it again, this is unquestionably the finest, most singular vineyard for Syrah in the world. Cassis, graphite, smoked herbs, liquid rocks and violet aromas give way to a huge, concentrated, opulent and off-the-charts beauty that just hints at its ultimate potential. I wouldn’t think about opening bottles for at least a decade, after which it will keep for 4-5 decades." (0...

Boscoe Wine Co., is owned by John Haskell and his son David Haskell, who take a minimalist approach to winemaking and do nearly all of the work by hand. The 2015 La Fai is from the certified organic Kimsey Vineyard in the Ballard Canyon AVA and was fermented with 11% Viognier, and about a third whole cluster. The wine was aged for nine months in 50% new and one-year barrels, and 50% neutral barrels.

Campesino Cellars is owned and made by husband/wife Griselda and Macario Montoya (Macario is the winemaker). They honor their Mexican heritage by naming their winery in honor of the Campesinos, the field workers (most of whom are Mexican) who tend to the majority of the vines in California Wine Country. The hands on their Syrah label are those of Griselda’s father Pablo Ceja, a career Campesino. The drawing is the work of Macario’s brother, Maceo Montoya. The wines, all Rhone-style, i.e. made from grapes of Rhone Valley, France origin, are “California st...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Even better, and possibly the greatest wine ever for this estate, the 2012 Syrah Stoneessence could merit a three-digit score in a few years. Made from 100% Syrah from their estate vineyard in The Rocks region of Walla Walla. This terroir always yields a perfumed, gamy complexity and this beauty doesn’t disappoint, with loads of cassis, smoked meats, olive tapenade, violets and lavender all literally soaring from the glass. The palate doesn’t disappoint either, and is full-bodied, seamless, perfectly balanced and...
