Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Gin (375ml)
Top Pick!
The story of Monkey 47 gin is romantic: in 1951, a British man named Montgomery Collins moved to Germany's Black Forest and opened a guesthouse named "Zum wilden Affen"--the wild monkey. Now considered a renowned gin drinker, Collins's taste for the spirit was unknown until renovation work at the country guesthouse led to the discovery of a weighty old wooden box containing a bottle and a letter. The dusty bottle had been labeled and decorated by hand, showing a sketch of a monkey and the words "Max the Monkey--Schwarzwald Dry Gin." The accompanying lett...

Mix this mouthwatering gin made in Australia's Yarra Valley into Negronis and other bold-flavored cocktails. (KN)" (08/2017) K&L Notes: The pride of Australia is now available here at K&L! After sweeping Double Gold at the San Francisco Spirits competition and wowing serious fans of gin around the world, Four Pillars is bringing its incredible gins from down under to the U.S. Utilizing "four pillars" of success (qual...

Made with "soft" water from Lake Bolmen in southern Sweden, known for its arctic purity, neutral corn spirits five-times distilled that lends sweetness to the gin and a blend of classic botanicals including juniper, coriander leaf and cardamom. The blend creates a gin with a warm, nutty spice punctuated by the addition of citrus (lemon, bergamot, lime and bitter orange) and sarawak black pepper, for a clean, refreshing gin with no funky aftertaste or astringency. Beautiful! Skip the tonic water with this gin; it's perfect unadulterated.

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "With its clean, neutral profile, this graceful gin works well with just about anything, from Aviation cocktails (natch) to bone-dry Martinis. On the palate, look for bewitching hints of caraway, juniper, grapefruit and a dry, faintly spicy finish. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: Aviation Gin is a unique partnership between Lee Medoff and Christian Krogstad of House Spirits Distilling in Portland, OR, and mixologist Ryan Magarian of Liquid Kitchen in Seattle, WA. Believed to the first collaboration of its kind, Aviation Gin evolve...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sweet-tasting and citrusy, this has a light herbal aroma. It shows distinct cucumber and lavender notes on the palate, and it should lend itself to spring and summer cocktails. (KN)" K&L Notes: Uncle Val’s is a small-batch botanical gin inspired by Zio Valerio’s love of gardening and native Tuscan cuisine. The botanicals are not only Uncle Val’s favorite cooking ingredients, but also happen to make an exceptionally unique and smoothly delicious gin. Producer note: "Uncle Val’s presents a complex and subtly pleasing sensation ...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for subtle fennel, licorice and sage notes on nose and palate, with a gentle, refreshing exhale that hints at lemon and lime peel. It is 'foraged from what grows in the mountains,' says the producer of this Irish gin's botanicals. (KN)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: This incredible Irish gin is a true terroir-driven product. They have a full-time forager (actually out foraging every day) and everything they pick goes into the still fresh, not dried. The result is a sustainable and intensely flavored gin. Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Made by Bruichladdich Distillery, which is renowned for its Scotch, on a pot-still named Ugly Betty. Sold in an attractive, square-shouldered, gift-worthy bottle. Four Pillars "Faultline" K&L Exclusive Gin (750ml)
Top Pick!
When our first batch of Four Pillars Faultline Gin ran out, we were all devastated. Initially conceived as a one-off project, the FP Fautlline turned out to be one of our most popular gins ever, both among staff and our customers. After months of trying to find a substitute, we conceded that the first go around was just too good and needed to be remade to the exact same specs. The initial batch was put together by David Driscoll, K&L Buyer Emeritus, wanting to build on the clean citrus notes and the creamy texture that are the calling cards of Four Pilla...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This unusual and appealing gin is made with yerba mate tea (“the most Argentinean drink of all,” the producer says) and dials back traditional juniper in favor of sprightly eucalyptus and peppermint. It's a warmer expression of gin, with a supersweet, cocoa-like aroma and flavor and velvety feel on the palate. *Top 50 Spirits of 2015* (KN)" (12/2015) K&L Notes: The first premium gin from Argentina brings not only divine botanical flavor, but a marriage of fine herbs and spices not normally used in standard gin production. Ye...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "There’s a lot going on in this gin, made with a mix of 29 botanicals, including California grapefruit, California bay leaf and a duo of mushrooms. Yet somehow, it all comes together: the opening salvo is spicy and bold with anise, pepper, and clove, before moving to a waxy lemon peel and juniper midpalate and finishing dry and dusty with suggestions of cocoa powder, coriander, and spicy grains of paradise. (KN)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: Distiller's notes: "Distilled with 29 botanicals, this gin is a celebration of the natural te...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Anise leads the mild aroma of this unusual gin made with 'Californian botanicals,' including Baja limes, fir tree, sea kelp, mint and almonds. The palate is slick and slightly viscous, with a lemony, faintly saline note that winds into a brisk, cooling finish that suggests an ocean breeze. (KN)" (08/2019) K&L Notes: This new uniquely Californian gin is the brainchild of chef and culinary TV personality Marsh Mohktari. He set out to make a one-of-a kind London Dry style gin that exhibited the wonderful bounties of the great S...

The Cotswolds distillery has been making a splash in the whisky and gin world over the last few years. They are relentlessly focused on locally sourcing their ingredients whenever possbile for both the gins and whiskies. The gin is made from a wheat base spirit and utilizes 9 carefully selected botanicals. Over 22 pounds of botanicals are used in each batch distillation (about 10x the typical botanical load of a premium London dry gin). The results are a phenomenally rich and aromatic spirit. The botanicals include fresh pink grapefruits and limes hand z...

This is NOT a rosé gin. It is a rose gin - as in the Irish rose. It's naturally colored and it's NOT sweet. You may have seen the disgusting "pink gins" out there jammed with artificial flavors, sweeteners, and color, but get that out of your mind. This is the real deal. The gin starts out as the Glendalough Wild Botanical Gin and then a variety of freshly picked rose petals ranging from the Wild Irish Rose to large fragrant Heritage Roses and the ancient prized Damask Rose all come together in the still and afterwards in a maceration to make this natura...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Distinctly fruity and floral on the palate, this has notes of rosewater and raspberry, braced by pepper and ginger flecks. This smooth and well-balanced gin is a good choice for making a berry-forward cocktail like the classic bramble. (KN)" (04/2013) K&L Notes: Eleventh-generation heirs Carl Jr. and Bob Nolet collaborated with their father, Carolus Nolet Sr., to create a fresh take on gin that appeals to a new generation of gin drinkers. Floral and fruit-forward, the Silver uses some unique ingredients like Turkish rose, pe...

The recipe for Gothic gin was created and inspired by the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona, Spain. All of the botanicals are handpicked and sourced from the finest organically grown sources. While there is a strong juniper backbone, the gin really showcases an amazing texture and creative selection of botanicals. There is a slight menthol characteristic and a spicy background of peppercorn. The texture is sublime. It's a wonder in a Martini, but equally at home in a G&T or Negroni. Don't be afraid to use this gin liberally, it mixes great. In fact, it's the q...

The exceptional Ford's Gin is one of the most versatile London Drys on the market. Distilled at the exceptional Thames Distillery by master distiller Charles Maxwell and the famous Simon Ford. They start with a base of Italian juniper and coriander seed, and the recipe is expanded thoughtfully to include bitter oranges, lemon and grapefruit peel. Subtle jasmine and orris add a soft floral quality, while spicy angelica root and cassia bark give it some structure. I've always noted a smidge of cucumber, but the distiller won't cop to it. Anyway, the mixtur...

It finishes lightly sweet, enlivened by white pepper and candied ginger sparks. *Best of 2016* (KN)" (08/2016) K&L Notes: No. 209 Gin is the brainchild of the Rudd family, who own both the Rudd Oakville Estate Winery and the gourmet market Dean & DeLuca. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is styled after a classic dry gin. Look for mild aromatics that nod to white flowers and citrus. On the palate, lightly sweet candied-lemon peel is framed by lively juniper and anise, finishing with a brisk flourish of pink peppercorns and ginger. Recommended for gimlets and other cocktails. (KN)" (07/2014) K&L Notes: The botanicals in North Shore's No. 11 Gin add fullness without taking away from the leading role of the juniper berries. The balance is remarkable and lends itself well to classic cocktails from a time wh...

The name "Piùcinque", which means "plus five" in Italian, comes from the first recipe that was used to create this gin. Once the balance of the ten botanicals were defined, the next task was to work on their intensity. As the team was analyzing different combinations, they only found one with the perfect alchemy. This bottle was tagged by the master distiller with the wording "plus five" (as there was a greater intensity of five of the ten botanicals) and from this the name Piùcinque was naturally born. The flavors of sage, bergamot, and ginger are what ...

The aroma mingles juniper and citrus; the palate also shows plenty of lemon curd sweetness and peppery spice (cubeb, grains of paradise, pink peppercorn), finishing spicy with white peppercorn and coriander seed. Gin was first made by Bordiga in 1889, and this gin is made from the original recipe. Only four main botanical flavors are used, some from the Occitan Alps, hence the name. The four are angelica, juniper, cardamom and a secret ingredient (with traces of orange and lemon peel). Occitan Gin has traditionally been made exclusively from juniper that grows wild (not cultivated) in the Maritime Alps, near Cuneo, which are some of the highest mountains in Europe. This combination of altitude and maritime influence enriches the essential oils of the juniper berr...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The producer describes this gin made from raw honey as “dancing the line between an Old Tom and a London Dry style.” We'd say it edges closer to Old-Tom gins, thanks to its surprising sweetness and understated juniper. Look for notes of candied lemon peel, vanilla, white pepper, and a whisper of spicy cinnamon. A touch viscous, it's unusually mouth coating for a gin. In the case of Beehive's Jack Rabbit Gin, the addition of sage and rose petals to the standard juniper recipe creates an absolutely beautiful balance of spicy, savory, and floral. Located...

Wine Enthusiast: "The 55% abv blue label is one of the strongest and most expensive gins on the market. Look for the trademark faint yellowish-saffron tinge and herbal scent, with assertive pine and anise flavors and a tart lemony touch. Serve this overproof gin tamed with ice and lots of tonic. (KN)" (04/2012) K&L Notes: Old Raj Gin is distinctive in that it contains a measure of saffron, the rare and costly spice derived from the crocus flower. In addition to the slightly spicy flavor, this also imparts a pale yellow color. The subtle, aristocratic b...

Ransom spirits is a one-man, artisanal distillery in Sheridan, Oregon, run by Tad Seestedt. The Old Tom gin is made on an alembic pot still, and is an historically accurate replication of what people were drinking in the 1800s during the golden age of American cocktails (in fact, cocktail historian David Wondrich collaborated on the project). It has just a touch of sweetness, a golden amber color, and is made from malted barley and corn. One of the most fun products we've played with this year, it is versatile, but classically styled. We just picked up an exciting new local distiller called Venus Spirits, located in nearby Santa Cruz. Sean Venus has taken over the old Sarticious space and installed his own 600 liter Spanish alembic still to make a number of interesting concoctions. It's a snappy, fresh, citrus-oriented spirit at a very good price point. The creaminess of the gin is quite lovely and the lavender comes strong on the finish.
