2015 Matias "Soberanes Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay
Review Date: 10-08-2019
With cool morning fog and sea breezes from Monterey Bay followed by warm afternoons, the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is a match made in heaven for growing Chardonnay. The Matias Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay capitalizes on these conditions to produce a truly stunning, well-balanced wine. Lemon verbena and tropical tarte tatin round out the nose followed by a creamy, acid-driven, saline finish on the palate. This Chardonnay outclasses similar wines at loftier price points easily.

2014 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 10-08-2019
Looking to add to your cellar? Does your Cabernet Sauvignon section look a bit sparse? The 2014 Mount Eden Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon would be a great choice. Forget about the overpriced usual suspects from Napa Valley; this vibrant mountain-grown Cabernet is the real deal. On par with Ridge's Monte Bello, the Mount Eden opens with an enticing floral and bramble fruit nose wrapped in an understated vanilla blanket. The palate strikes a fine balance between plush cassis and silky, well-integrated tannins. This wine will continue to delight for decades to come.

2013 Varner "Hidden Block - Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Review Date: 09-29-2019
Nestled about 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean at elevations between 600 and 700+ feet, "The Hidden Block" is one of several distinct blocks of Spring Ridge Vineyard that Varner has vinified individually. Hand-farmed since 1980, this luscious Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot Noir delivers an uncanny combination of perfume, depth, and balance. Bursting with aromas of cherry, fruits des bois, anise, black tea and allspice, this wine finishes with a hint of herbaceous savoriness. With its limited production, surprising affordability and the loss of their lease in 2014, the 2013 Varner Hidden Block Spring Ridge Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir is definitely worth snagging.

2016 Dashe "Reserve" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
Review Date: 04-16-2019
Zinfandel is often overlooked as a serious option when shopping for a food friendly wine. Frequently relegated to two distinct categories (White zin & insanely high alcohol fruit bombs), Zin is regularly overshadowed by Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons; but "California's Grape" has a great deal to offer savvy, value-minded customers. The Dashe, "Reserve Dry Creek Valley," Zinfandel is a perfect example of the variety. A classic Dry Creek Zin with a complex spectrum of flavors, balancing pure fruit and bright acidity. The husband & wife team at Dashe strive to make terroir-driven wines with minimal intervention. Aromas of dark brambly fruit abound, along with subtle cocoa and floral notes. The palate is alive with dark chocolate and black pepper spice underlying the velvety, intense midpalate. Finishing with a balanced, sweet red-fruit note this is definitely one of my go-to wines when manning the grill!

Would you like to expand your Pinot Noir horizons? Thankfully California is blessed with an abundance of prime Pinot growing regions. Another fine example of cool climate California Pinot Noir. Bursting with high-toned fruit wrapped in a blanket of baking spice, this wine is a stunner.
