A wonderfully delicious and layered rye. It's amazing that the difference between this and the 13 is only the barrel. It's softly sweet, and a wonderful cinnamon spice stand out. It is very, very sippable, even neat. In fact, our lovely office colleague Frances took a small sip and immediately announced she was having a little more!

The Fallet-Dart Champagnes all represent fantastic values, and there are a number to choose from depending on your preference and budget. Each on shows a lovely toasty note from their preference for long lees contact. The Grande Selection adds 15% Chardonnay to the cuvee but still has the Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier dominant. It shows a bit more of a creamy refined character with lovely plump white fruits and a tangerine hint on the edges. It shows a nice bold mouthfeel and a long finish.

The Fallet-Dart Champagnes all represent fantastic values, and there are a number to choose from depending on your preference and budget. Each on shows a lovely toasty note from their preference for long lees contact. The Grand reserve is rich but has a lovely crunchy crispness of fresh citrus over red apple fruit. It finishes up with a very refreshing clean snap

2007 Thiénot "Black Ball" Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne
Review Date: 08-06-2019
The Black Ball is not only an amazing way to support a fine children's charity, it's a absolutely lovely high-end Champagne at a great price. With aromatics and flavors of brioche, light spice and laced with gentle honeysuckle, the Champagne is both complex and elegant in style with an unmistakable feeling of pedigree. And for good reason: the fruit came from one of the most famous, super high-end Champagne houses, which sold off some parcels in three Grand Cru villages at a time when they needed cash flow. The style is wonderfully different but the quality is immediately evident.

2018 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough
Review Date: 07-21-2019
A perennial favorite here at K&L, the 2018 version of the TWR Sauvignon Blanc is a real beauty. Fresh and delineated with a sure footed backbone of fine minerality and acidity, yet beautifully fleshed out with mouthwatering tropical fruit, lime leaf and a wonderfully refreshing slightly saline finish. Something about this wine simply sails my mind away to an afternoon of palm trees, beaches and grilled seafood fresh from the ocean. Yes please, I'll have another!

Nicolas Maillart "Platine" Brut Champagne

Lovely citrus and white blossom nose and a palate of bright and crisply citrus fruit, but with a nice textural and flavor modest component of oak. Quite dry and refreshing and extremely pleasing finishing with a clean, clear Meyer lemon wash.

Like many of my colleagues, I absolutely love the Franck Millet Sancerre, it's exactly what I want from a Sancerre. It's a staple at my own home and I've turned many of my long term customers on to this gem. Perfectly dry and mouthwatering lovely ripe citrus fruits layered over rounder nearly tropical fruits (dry pineappel/ guava range) and pleasing fine minerals. It's fantastic how many layers open up in this Sauvignon Blanc - a testament to the fine vineyards and skill of Franck and Betty Millet - who happen to be two of the nicest people in the wine business on top of all that!

2013 Larrivet-Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan
Review Date: 06-30-2019
The 2013 Larrivet Haut Brion Blanc is one of the better white Graves from this vintage. Wonderfully mature and rich with a lovely golden hue and a long palate. Plenty of stony mineral and acidity, with a beeswax and dry apricot/peach fruit supported by a nice dense palate feel. Absolutely amazing with roast chicken or duck.

How exciting to have an all Pinot Blanc Champagne! Beautiful florals and light brioche on the nose with a silky elegant yet somewhat tropical palate of enticing fruit. Fine and elegant in the mousse as well, with a slight touch of peach stone at the finish. An absolutely delicious and luxurious Champagne.

2015 Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia
Review Date: 04-24-2019
Coming from Margaret River, it isn't surprising that the Vasse Felix is a stunning and complex example of Cabernet. Great balance and texture and restrained rather than one of the big bold monsters some associate with Australia. A bright red cassis nose laced with a minty herb and lovely earthy undertone give way to a palate of medium bodied red and blue fruits with fine tannins and a wonderful elegant minerality. Even after 24 hours this wine was still opening up so do yourself a favor and put a few away for a few years.

Exactly what I want in special occasion Champagne - rich hazelnut cream, spicy baked apple, notes of honey and a wonderfully toasty overlay, yet it has great acidity and is still fresh - a wonderful balancing act. Perfect bubbles and silky palate texture, this is perfection in a bottle. Heidsieck has spent a huge amount of effort on quality across the range of their Champagnes, and this is absolutely spectacular!

Egrot (formerly Elisabeth Goutorbe) Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-19-2019
The quality of the Egrot Brut based on 2008 isn't as surprising when you consider that it is almost all Grand Cru Ay fruit (80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chard)and benefits from the wonderful talents of the Egrot team. The small does of Mutigny fruit provides a lovely texture and creamy notes layered over a nicely chalked minerality. Superb!

Laurent-Perrier "Cuvée Rosé" Brut Rosé Champagne

You don't become one of the world's best selling Rose Champagnes for no reason. The all Pinot Noir, all Grand Cru LP Rose is truly a gem - rich and plenty powerful, with a palate of lightly spiced raspberry and wild strawberry fruit and a creamy finish and framed by perfect acidity. Somehow LP manages to combine richness and elegance into one stunning Champagne.

Another Awesome result from Egrot in a less than easy vintage. Some winemakers have this special talent and it has become clear they do as well. Egrot (formerly Elisabeth Goutorbe) Extra Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-05-2019
I loved the Champagnes as E. Goutorbe and still love them as Egrot! 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chard. Extra Brut throws a lot of us off, but it really is just the dry end of Brut. The wine itself has nice angularity and crispness in a very dry style. The grams/liter really only can be understood in relation to the acidity and fruit ripeness - this bottling has a wonderful balance here and just begs for a plate of oysters.

2012 Michel Arnould "Memoire de Vignes" Brut Champagne
Review Date: 02-05-2019
Wonderfully powerful and with layers of complexity, the Memoire is an astonishingly great Champagne. This quite small production is always a favorite value in luxury cuvee Champagne.

Michel Arnould "Reserve" Brut Verzenay Champagne

Verzenay has the distinction of being north facing, yet decidedly warmer and able to produce wonderful Pinot Noir. The Michel Arnould Reserve uses this (75% Pinot Noir) to produce a wonderfully rich and mouth filling champagne with a charming fruit profile combining white peachy fruit and red berries. A layer of creamy nuttiness is the perfect compliment and lovely acidity holds it all together perfectly.

We all know Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from Champagne, but a small fraction (less than 1%) of the vines are of 4 other heritage varietals including Pinot Gris (Fromenteau) from which this beauty is made. This rare gem is a definite must for the lover of history and heritage crops and of course any Champagne lover. The Champagne really surprises right from the initial aromas which are remarkably rich. The flavors follow through with very lively acidity, absolutely dancing on the tongue and a clear bright palate of apple, pear and quince. The wonderful influence of lees compliments the palate perfectly and a lingering finish lures you back for more. What a great find!

Now here's something really special in the whisky world! What a great combination of cask and whisky here - The Zin barrels really add a zesty spice to a rich corn based spirit. Full and round and with a nice sweet touch without ever being cloying - a touch of water really brings out a rich note of malt on the nose. The color seems quite intense likely influenced a lot by the wine barrels.

How do you make a classic pleasing Champagne even better? Bring in some new spectacular fruit sources including a lot of Grand Cru Chardonnay and add 'La Cuvee' to the name. The replacement for the LP Brut is just fantastic! It shows a more creamy nose next to the previous LP, and a finer more mineral driven palate impression. The round and fairly ripe apple and peach middle has an appealing steely core, and a chalky minerality underpinning it all. Even more refined than the Champagne it replaces, LP has an even better winner on their hands here.

OK, I have to admit I'm more of a Scotch and Cognac drinker so a Tequila has to be off the charts to make me think I want to write up something. This is THE best Tequila I have ever sipped. Pure, bright and elegant are not always the descriptors you expect of a Tequila, but this fits the bill precisely. The nose is absolutely charming with a pure agave quality interlaced with aromas of lime, spice and a note of aromatic pine. On the palate it is wonderfully complex, a bit smoky, oaky and spicy with citrus and that beautiful quince like fruitiness great Tequila always shows me. The story is captivating enough to make you want to try it, but the experience will bring you back for more. Bravo!
